Why not encourage your son to offer some assistance to an elderly neighbour or volunteer organization for a day - it will keep him busy, give him a sense of accomplishment and teach him about charity and giving back to the community.

Make up a story. Get some notebook paper and one of you start writing a story and then hand it off to the other and they'll write some, and then pass it back and forth. This can get really funny, if you have a good sense of humor.
Find some old boxes or wood and each of you build a racecar and see which one is better built and goes faster.
