Who says you can't use them because of family? What do they own the name? Would they be offended if you took the name that isn't really theirs that has been around for centuries and that they took from someone else?
I don't understand that. If you want to name your child a name that someone in the family already has go for it. Seriously. Don't let the fact that your sister or your niece has the same name stop you. There are thousands of people with those names. You have just as much right to use it as they do.
I get touchy about this because I took a lot of grieve from my in-laws for naming one of my sons the same name as my sister in laws child.
I said, so my brother has the same name, I had a 6th grade teacher with that name, my neighbor has that name, there is someone in the bible with that name, heck, it is the most popular boys name for 15 years in a row. What gives you claim to it over the rest of us?
Names are fair game. If people want to have a child with the only one with that name pick something strange and unusual and even then someone might like it and copy it.
There are no family copyright on names. I was accused of copying. And, who was she copying?
Any way, I named one son after a brother in law, another son after my husband, and another after my brother. Which happened to be a cousin too!
So what if my in-laws think it is weird. I just happen to like the same names. One time I got so mad at them I made some crack about not being able to like and enjoy the same things. So, if my sister in law likes red and she wears red then I can't wear red? What if she really likes diet coke? Am I allowed to drink it too?
Same with the name. I am allowed to like the same name and experience the joy that naming my child that name brings.
Period.

you know alexis mackenzie sounds like a very pretty name but how about trying your sign or the babies sign.
I am having a baby too and I love the name Jayden but for a boy.
I was watching tv the other day and there was a little girl named Gwendolynn and I thought that was pretty. I aslo like Madison.
