What happened to "normal" baby names?

As a teacher, I am longing for the days of Sarah and Michael. What happened to the glory days of pronoucable, realistic, and literary correctness in baby names? Was it just too much to name kids Kyle?

I am so tired of not being able to read a name without a parent-provided pronunciation key. If your baby name requires any sort of explaination, it is a terrible choice. If your baby name is not found in the top 1000 on the social security list, it is a terrible choice.

My question is simple: What happened to baby names? When did creativity become a prerequisite for child birth. Pick a name, spell it correctly, or plan for a college and therapy fund.

Answer:
If as an employer,I'm looking at job applications and I see John or Orangejello,(Or Ran Ja Lo) who do you think I'm going to call first ??
too common, boring. people want to be original, unique.
Crazy people on drugs. I like Sarah and will name my future child that if a girl or else, Noah, for a boy. I like classic Old Testament names and traditional British names--Victoria, Elizabeth, Gloria, etc.
shut up, Dakota.
beats me
lol i agree.

not to offend anyone, but i just have to say that nevaeh (heaven spelled backwards) is the weirdest name i've ever heard. it's so ghetto.
I'm with you. My niece just had a baby girl and named her River. She wanted to spell it Ryver, but we did convince her to at least spell it so people would not misprounce it.
But baby names, just like language, are arbitrary... Your normal is another person's "weird" or "creative." :)

The human eye can see something like 16 million different colors. Why should we only expect to read 1000 different names?
Well lets see my kids names are Amber Carol Jonathon Faith and Grace people want to be different
No offence meant, you sound like a control freak.
spell it correctly... english isn't even phonetic you could spell it several ways and still say it's correct.
Saying "If your baby name is not found in the top 1000 on the social security list, it is a terrible choice." that's like saying "if a band isn't in the top 1000 it's not worth listening to"

If you want to conform to normalcy, go ahead, but why do you care what other people name their children?

we could go back to the olden days where boys were named ashly...
You have fun with that.

I'll keep my name to Skye, strange as it is.
I can't agree more. Parents seem to make them up from God knows where.

I always suggest Steven, Kurt, Robert, etc. when
people ask for suggestions here but they fall on deaf ears.

PS Lady above me is on drugs.
I agree with you. And it seems like so many kids are getting the same silly names anymore. What are these kids going to do when they grow up? If an employer can't say your name or if you have a stupid name, they are not going to give you a job. You'll notice I have a little boy named Jon. Nice, simple, easy to say, no silent letters so it should be easy for him to spell in school!
i agree. honestly, think about it, who wants to be an 80 year old amile (pronounced a-mil-e, and yes, i have a pregnant friend naming her child that). pick a name a. people can pronounce, and b. in 50 years your child won't be embarrassed by.
DEAR I DO NOT KNOW YOUR GRAND MOTHER SHOULD HAVE A OLD BABY NAMING BOOK LIKE MY AUNT HAS AND MY MOTHER YOUR MOTHER MIGHT HAVE THE SAME ONE OK GOOD LUCK HAPPY NEW YEAR
Amen sister...

This horrific trend to abuse children with these "oh so celebrity chasing" crap names is something the children will regret until they are old enough to realize that getting a good job has been made 10x harder because of a parent's stupidity and ego.

How many "Candys" are there running companies?

Let's all get in the car and go visit Grandma ALKSFHLSKJHSKLJ.

If it's so hot parents, change your own name!
These things go in cycles! It all depends on your personality. My husband and I were always rather quiet and shy and enjoyed our easily spelled, easily pronounced names. Many parents are struggling with their own personal identities and are adding their own issues to their kids so that they might get to feel unique! So they name them something unique and build it up as a wonderful thing to be unique and special. Unfortunately, these kids are quite often crushed to find out their unique name is owned by 5 people in their new school!

As for the glory days of pronouncable, realistic, commonly spelled names--there never was one! My grandmother is Magdalena and her sister was Lagatha. Meant to be pronounced with good German-Russian accents! Here is the U.S. there's always a new wave of people coming in with names we can't pronounce or spell. It makes us special! LOL
society now a days is less traditional and more focused on individualtiy
I know what you mean but only because my last name (as a child) was horribly difficult.
I have two kids now and wanted to go for normal easy names... Lauren and Parker..easy to pronounce and spell!
im sure thats what so many people said over the generations. names from way back are soo different from the names of 20 years ago. everything changes names included. there is no real normal name. true some are a bit more far fetched. but think everything is reinvented over time. who knows maybe when the babies of today have their own kids theyll name their children names popular in the 1800's.
I have no children that is why it is a little bit hard to give answer still...When I'll look for a name a name I wouldn't surely choose one which is in passports of thousands of people in my country. a child should feel special. But the name shouldn't be unpronouncable, of course.
I believe is a misguided sense of sophistication and a hope to be admired and looked up to. I recently read an article from Austria which stated that the less education parents have, the more likely they were to give their children made-up names. Many of these names will be changed to more traditional names when the children become adults.
where do you get off thinking that YOU are the end-all source for appropriate names? parents should not have to change their child's name just because you are too lazy to learn to pronounce something you are unaccustomed to.

and literary correctness? Nobel-Prize winning author V.S. Naipaul includes a character named Eddoes in his novel "Miguel Street." know how to pronounce that? i'm guessing you don't. Epic poet Homer writes of a character named Aiakhos in his "Odyssey." Nobel-Prize winner Yasunari Kawabata names a character Komako in his novel "Snow Country." would you be satisfied if one of your students was named after J.J.R. Tolkien character, such as Legolas or Gandalf?
i'd listen to the examples of literary legends or Nobel-Prize winners about an appropriate "literary" name over your opinion any day.

my name is Brennan. this isn't a normal name and i wouldn't change it for anything in the world, even if i have to jump through hoops to get people to pronounce it correctly.
not being an *** but this a very racist post...so your saying that african american people cant name there kids kwan, or latisha or mexicans cant name there kids roberto or jose..with your post your saying that everyone should be named a traditional white name form the 50s
Personally, I'm glad I have a unique name. I always felt comfortable expressing my individuality. I don't know why anyone would name their baby Jon or Mike. That's so boring, you might as well just pick it at random from the baby name book. I would have hated to be a Jennifer or Emily.
Im naming my daughter Savannah Rose, I think it is normal and sounds sophisticated. The odd spellings can be torture, even on the what used to be "normal name"
My name is Natalie, regular spelling, but I met someone 2 weeks ago with the same name as me, but it was spelled "Nathaleigh" I mean that doesnt even look how its spelled. But oh well.
the kids will suffer this generation, I bet next generation it will be back to "easy, normal, names" lol
Parents are afraid. They are afraid that if they give their child a "normal" name, as you call it, then their child might sink into the world of invisibility, that having a bland name gives them less chance of being noticed, of being recognized. They are also afraid of "same name" syndrome. That's when a child named, say, Sarah might get confused in a world where millions of Sarahs and one unspecific caller. Also, foreign people have foreign names. They can't help it if their child is named Nghi and no English person can pronounce it! Personally, I don't want to be named Jane Smith, have social security/IRS mistake me for another Jane Smith, and get blamed for the crap that SHE did!
As a teacher, you should be embracing individuality, not condemming it. Why do you think kids are bullied? People can either be admired or shunned for their differences. You say that the names should be found in the top 1000, that means that there would only be 1000 different names in the world, would that not be boring? This is either a case of conformity, or just, (like some older people reluctant to use technology) failure to be open to new ideas and advances.

It is silly that celebrities want to call their names that are 'cool,' but is it so bad that people want their kids to have an individual identity?
Normal names are so boring. Who wants to name their kids John and Jane?

I named my son Julian because it is different and no one else has his name in our town.

For you to be a teacher it looks like you wouldn't be worried about what a kids name is you should be worrying if you are teaching them right or not.
I will tell you what happened to normal names.everyone has them and it was getting annoying..time for a change out with the old and in with the new
I just had to laugh when I read your question!

I used to work as a medical secretary in a pediatrics office. I took a call from a new mom that wanted to schedule the baby for an appointment. I asked what the baby's name was and she replied, "A-shol-lee". When I asked her to spell it, she said, "a-s-s-h-o-l-e." I almost died! She said that she made the name up. Um, really? I wonder if she even realized that her poor daughter would go through life being an a*shole?
In the world we live in today people want to be different and sometimes the difference can become so common because everyone wants to join the trend of wanting to be different. The media tends to make a big deal about famous people with baby names and society thinks awww how cute and want to be copycats.
