Why do parents pick names for you that are so ordinary?

why? should we all pick Hollywood-type names like Moses and Apple so we set our kids up for teasing?
It's good have an ordinary name as long as it isn't the most popular name of the time. If you are "Ashley", I can understand how you feel. I know many, many Ashleys. You could consider using your middle name.
I wouldn't know. I have had a unique name all of my life. It is not better or worse than any other name. It is what they chose for you out of love. Embrace it!
I chose a super ordinary name for my son, not because it was my very favorite name, but because it was my dad's name. I loved and respected my dad so I wanted to honor his memory by naming my son after him.
No creativity or their too scared of what other people will think.

People pick common ordinary names for their children because they want the child to have a respectable name. There is still a strong stereotype that people with unique names can never be in a high position. Another common reason is the name they choose has sentimental value. Many children are named after a family member or another who has had great impact on the parent. Yet others just prefer the ordinary names.
A Persons name isn't somthing to toy with, I can understand giving a family name or cultural name (save for those "African" names some people are giving out) but other than that there is no excuse for subjecting your kid to teasing just so you can tell your friends and the country club you gave your child a unique name.

sometimes people are named after family members, other times they want to please their husbands, wives, parents, grandparents so they pick just plain names.
or if they are like me, i picked my daughters name out when i was a child, i have always loved this name and decided back then i would name my child this even though it is a decade later. luckily the name still isnt very popular but this may not be the case for other people.
Maybe there opinion of ordinary is not the same as yours.
Also, some people try not to name their children weird names.
1. Because most of them are easier to spell & they aren't having to spell their name for everyone they meet all of their lives.
2. Because they are easier to pronounce.
3. Because they might have an ancestor with that name and they want to honor that person.
4. Because they don't want the child teased all through school.
5. Because they will most likely earn more respect on the job as they get older.
People really need to think about the child's future when they name them. These cute "hollywood" names are all fun when the child is a little baby/toddler. But what about when they are 20 something and go for their first job interview??
I think every parent picks whatever name they pick because that name speaks to them. When you hear a name you have preconceived thoughts in your head from different emotions to things like "slacker" or "successful" and when a parent finds a name that says what they want or expect in their child they go with that name.
That's just my opinion... and I have a very ordinary name.
Because that's the way most parents like it. They don't have time to come up with unique names that nobody knows how to pronounce or what it means.
Because they're popular at the time, or they're "safety" names... they know they're so ordinary that people won't make fun of them... I would rather have a more original name than blending in with everyone else.
Because they can. I put alot of consideration into whether or not my son was going to struggle with no one being able to spell his name and if people were going to make fun of his name before chosing his name.
I know everyone says that Jayden is a fad name but I am naming my son Jayden because his dad's middle name is Jade and that is a girl name...But we wanted Jade in his name somewhere.
We have a very unusual last name. I certainly could not have given my children unusual first names as well. Children are mean enough could you imagine going through life as Esmeralda Espenhorst.

My name is Jennifer and I always hated being 1 of 4 in my class. A name identifies you...And especially being a girl, you want to have your own sense of individuality with your name. I often asked my mom, "why! Couldn't you have given me any other name?? couldn't you be more original?" And she just says that she really liked the name Jennifer and didn't know it was oridinary. I guess names just become ordinary, and parents usually have no idea or don't care. Only in the last decade, have people had easy access (internet) to name statistics. That's why I think it's important for parents to avoid names like Ava and Madison (or any names in the top 10), which "sound" very fresh to us now...but will be stale and ordinary in 2 decades.
Maybe so their teachers and credit card companies don't have to ask them to pronounce and spell their name EVERY time they talk to them.
BECAUSE THEY ARE OLD AND DONT LIKE THE UNIQUE NAMES WE PICK NOW DAYS
If you think that naming your daughter after her father is ordinary then something is wrong.

My fathers name is ordinary for a man, but not for a woman.
So you blend in at school and life in general, and don't get beaten up. Also, so they don't rhyme with anything peculiar.
