How harmful is it eating non-iodized salt for 3 months (pregnant with young children at home)?
Now, I am 7-week of pregnancy and my children are between 2 to 9 years old. How harmful is it since we might not get iodine for the past 3 months? I just learned that iodine deficiency is very serious to fetus and young children. Could I still keep my baby/fetus? How should I do to help my young children (do we need to see pediatrician)?
Thanks a lot!
A worried pregnant mom with 5 children
Answer:
Dear Mom,. Stop worrying! I take it that you eat fruit and veges, and you probably eat some fish, so you are getting iodine in your diet. Im allergic to iodine and only ever use non iodised salt and never eat seafood, but I dont have a deficiency. Neither did my daughter who sucessfully survived life in my womb without suplemented iodine. Relax, congrats on the baby!
Call the pediatrician and your O.B.
the general thinking in nutrition today is that iodized salt is unnecessary for most people, because we get enough iodine in the foods we eat. many foods are fortified today and many more have added salt. iodine deficiency is a serious matter, but it is nowhere near as likely to happen today, as it was 50 years ago.
so relax.
