However, and I am not trying to sounds negative, but if hurts there is a reason -which is likely fixable. It IS possible to salvage your nursing relationship if you want to. It is up to you, but weaning is much easier when the child is ready. And breastfeeding is so special.

I stopped nursing in the day before I did at night. After awhile, I was able to get the night time feeding gone too. Your kid might be old enough to reward him with other things. Good Luck! :)
At 20 months he is old enough to know what is going on. Him throwing a fit is just playing you, If you just deal w/ it for a couple of days, he will figure out your not giving in and he will.
Good for you for nursing that long! They recommend you go from the breast to a regular cup and skip the sippy cup phase this late. You may have to put up w/ lots of screaming, but it can be done.
he will eventually take a pacifier but he will no doubt cry for awhile..just be patient but firm with him!
