Freezing embryos... why don't they just freeze the eggs?
It got me thinking... why couldn't they have just frozen her eggs and then induced conception the two years later when the lady wanted them?
Is there a medical reason why that wasn't viable and they had to be embryos before they were frozen?... There was no issue with the man's sperm. I'm sure other individuals have their eggs frozen before they are made into embryos. I was just wondering if someone knew the reason?
Answer:
While eggs have been successfully frozen and thawed, and there have been some successful births using such eggs, it is a relatively new practice...it is not widely available yet, nor widely supported by the medical community at this point. Basically, there's just not sufficient confidence in the procedure yet.
And it is much more uncertain than freezing embryos, which is, of course, why embryo freezing has been around for a while and egg freezing has been basically in development for some time. The eggs are more fragile, and the processes of freezing and thawing them much more questionable.
With some more success in the egg freezing arena, it will likely become more widely practiced and available. However, if the process of freezing eggs continues to be more complicated than freezing embryos, it will likely be more expensive to accomplish the former.
You can freeze eggs too. That's how donor eggs are used. But this technology is fairly new.
thye do freeze eggs maybe they froze the embryos because they wanted a specific sperm donor?
Yes, you can freeze eggs. The problem here was most likely that at the time the embryos were conceived, both people in the relationship were probably on board, and one eventually changed their minds. Freezing eggs is a relatively new technology, however. And if she'd done that, she would still have had to use a sperm donor.
