It's the second way.
Your luteal phase is the part of your cycle that stays pretty much constant, within two or three days of the same length most cycles.
So you get your period. For some reason, a few weeks later, you don't ovulate. Maybe you're stressed or haven't been eating right. But eventually you ovulate ... say 5 days later than you normally would. Your body is trying to keep your luteal phase its normal length to maximize your chances for conception (if it's cut short, the egg might not have time to implant). So your period is five or so days later than you expected, but it's not technically 'late' because it was still within the normal range for your luteal phase.
So now your period was late. Your body doesn't care ... to it, the slate's been wiped clean. It's starting over with baseline hormones and it's a new cycle. So that late period won't affect your next ovulation in any way. It'll be on time or near the right time (if it's normally predictable).
Period is late due to late ovulation. Next ovulation cycle will be from last day of present period. Remember...you ovulate and egg is released...if not fertilized the womb slouches away the prepatory and that is the actual menses. Hence.period late due to ovulation late:)
