Was Pinochet a hero?
I mean what good has communism done? Why be against Pinochet? Why be against killing communist? He did humanity a service in my opinion. Not to mention Chile has the strongest economy and lowest unemployment because of his policies 25 years ago. What is wrong with that?

I hard to say that Pinochet was a hero because he achieved great things at the cost of human lives but... He definitely saved Chile from comunism and created the great nation it is today... The only country that had no foreing debt in all of latin america. When he felt Chile was stable safe from comunism he left power and made free elections. Where would Chile be if Allende would have remained in power? How many people would be living now in poverty, and without total freedom, because lets face it there is NO comunism with freedon and without violation of every single human right know to man. Yes he did kill some comunists and he violated some human rights but he was not nearly as bad a Fidel Castro in Cuba one of the worst Dictators know of our century or other right-wind dictatorships like the one that occured in Guatemala. At the end his acomplishments weigh a lot more than his negative actions.

well, Pinochet did saved Chile from Communism and built a very strong economic system. BUT he killed more than 3 000 people. Nobody knows how many disappeared during the years when he had the power. I think that the people are more important than the economy . Might he was a great politician but for me he's a murderer.

3000 killed or dissapeared. if it wasnt for the 3000 deaths caused directly or indirectly by him, Chile would be a third world country like its neighbors Peru, Bolivia, and to a lesser extent Argentina, where thousands die every day from poverty. 3000 in 17 years is under 200 / year. and remember that most of them were actively fighting against the government, through the use of violence. Because of Pinochet, many lives are spared every day, from the poverty which Allende and Marxism were causing.
i know many cubans, who hate Fidel Castro, and wish Pinochet would have been born cuban. they evny Chile because of our great General.
if it wasnt for Pinochet, i wouldnt be writing this right now. i would probably be like our Peruvian or Bolivian neighbors, trying to get an education to break out of the cycle of poverty. or mayeb id be dead because of diseased that affect the poor.
about a month ago, Milton Friedman died. and now Pinochet. for me, and for a big part of Chile this is a time of mourning for two people who made Chile the great nation it is today.
