For parents with children who have celiac!?

my son i think has celiac he has many of the symptoms i was just woundering what i could feed him. im going in the morning to find out for sure. He is nine and a half months. how do you deal with a child with celiac? what is it like?

Answer:
I'm really curious to see how people answer this as I am gluten intolerant and believe my daughter who is almost three is as well. Basically you will just have to feed him foods that do not contain gluten. This can be both easy or hard depending on how you look at it, and what you and your family are accustomed to now eating wise.
SInce your son is still young it should be relatively easy to keep his diet gluten free. Don't feed him anything with wheat, rye, oats, or barley in it. It is becoming more and more common to find foods labeled gluten free, but what I do is just try to stay away from the mixes and gluten free snacks. They are expensive and a lot of times nasty tasting. We eat fruits, veggies, rice, potatoes, and meat. There are a ton of junk foods out there that are gluten free too but I wouldn't feed a baby a lot of them just yet. There are wonderful web sites on raising kids gluten free as well- just search for gluten free kids.
If your son is going to be tested for celiac do NOT begin feeding him gluten free yet. He must eat gluten for the antibodies to appear in his blood, and even then sometimes the tests are not right. Do not give up if you really think he is celiac or gluten intolerant. Keep pushing for a diagnosis that works for him. It took my mom years to find out she was celiac and doctors told her so many times that she was just crazy and bored, that she should be on prozac, etc. They really thought she was making up her symptoms because they couldn't find out what was wrong with her.
I would really recommend going to a doctor who is familiar with celiac disease and gluten intolerance (as they are not the same) because many doctors have still not heard of it, and many are actually skeptical of it and the MANY symptoms it can show.
Good luck.
