I'm a doctor and am about to have a baby. Will it be harmful to my career to take a couple of years off?

I want to take time off to raise my child and spend time with him/her, but I don't know if this will be detrimental to my career or if taking 3-4 years off will set me back in the long run. If anyone has ever been in a similar predicament, please share your thoughts? Thanks to all those who take time to answer.

Answer:
I am not a Dr but, When my daughter was born I took off 1 yr from college and it was hard to get back into it. My suggestion is to work part time in the beginning and see how it goes. I know being a parent for the first time is hard but, I balance a full time job just graduated from college and still make plenty of time for my girl. You will be fine a good luck in you decision-what ever you may choose.
It may some but you have to think about your child as well.
i think as long as you keep up with your medical skills you should be okay...you didn't state if you're in pvt practice, public health, or what. keep one foot in the door if you can. i think it's more important to be with our kids for at least the first 3-4 years...if possible. good luck with the baby.
If it is not the money you need then you could do part time work in a hospital or clinic to keep up with what is going on.

You don't need to be with the baby 24 a day. Work three days a week and you still have plenty of time for the child.

From what I know abut your profession it is best to keep your hand in all the time so you are not forgotten and later will be able to fit in at a good position.
I think that no matter what the cost to your career it is best for your child for you to be a stay home mom if you can afford it. The bonding you will have those first three years will create a relationship with your child that is well worth the sacrifices!
I really suggest working part time. It'll be good for you, your child, and your career, honestly.
