Could I be pregnant?? I have been taking birth control for 10 years and a few weeks ago I took an antibiotic.?

I totally did not think about using back up protection while I was taking the antibiotic. I was suppose to start my period Sunday and I haven't. What are the chances that I might be pregnant? If I took a pregnancy test could I get a false positive from the birth control pills??

Answer:
I don't think it's likely, but it's always possible. Regardless of the use of antibiotic: no birth control is 100 percent effective, and if you're sexually active you could be pregnant. And as you clearly know, antibiotics can lessen the effectiveness of hormonal birth control.

Have your cycles been out of whack before while on the pill? It's not unusual for that to happen.

Take a test -- the pills will not cause a false positive. Pregnancy tests (whether of the home variety or in a doctor's office...whether testing urine or blood) work by detecting human chorionic gonadotrophin, or hcg (the so-called "pregnancy hormone"), a hormone your body manufactures after an embryo implants in the uterine lining. While there are a couple of circumstances under which a person would have detectable levels of hcg even in the absence of pregnancy, they are rare (as in, a very rare form of cancer might cause the manufacture of hcg...and one or two other such rare things) -- so if you get a positive result, you can trust in it.

I do think the chances are slim though. I hope you get the result you want.

Good luck.
what about your comma
taking an antibotic will not mess with your Birth control.
no i dont tihnk so after taking birth control for that long sometimes u dont get ur period for a few months after u stop birth control.
There is a chance so you might as well take a test and no being on the pill will not give you a false positive.
my mom was on birth control when she got pregnant with me.be on the look out.
Antibiotics do effect your birth control. Is your period usually like clockwork? If it is than I'd say you are pregnant. If it isn't than maybe you're not pregnant. Take an EPT they're usually pretty accurate that's how my friend found out she was pregnant while she was on the pill.
Well, take the test to find out!

The sooner the know the better your ante natal care and the better your chances of having a healthy baby.

My mother got pregnant @ 40, even though she was on the pill! lol!
Frst of all, you should think about getting off the birth control pills. They cause alot of health problems, but they do not give a false positive on a pregnancy test. Take the early pregnancy test. Both times I took it, it was very accurate.
Yes, It is possible that you could be pregnant, and yes, you can get a false reading on a pregnancy test. I suggest you make and appointment with your Dr or Family clinic.
I know you aren't supposed to continue to take the pill if you are pregnant, but I don't know what harm it causes the baby if you do. (I never used the pill)
You're only 3 days late..the human body doesn't run like a timepiece so don't worry just yet.

Worrying can actually delay the onset of a period. My ex-GF was 17 days late once...and we both worried for nothing.

So smile and go about your day and keep busy.

FYI antibiotic WILL mess with the pill. Dependiing on what PILL you take. When I was on the pill dr's warned me if going to prescribe an antibiotic. Had to use a back up method. ALSO not starting my be nerves. I would give it a week or so before I would panic.
Asking a bunch of anonymous people on a forum will do you no good in figuring this out. I would strongly suggest going to your doctor and asking. First call your office and ask if you can speak with one of the nurses on duty and see if s/he can answer this question.

More than likely you'll have to make an appointment, but it's better to be safe than sorry. They'll give you the blood pregnancy test and you'll find out.

If you're interested in inducing a period, then my suggestion would be Parsley Tea. What you do is take one tablespoon of dried parsley leaves (the kind found in the spice aisle) and put them in a strainer and make tea. Drink this constantly for three days and on the third day you should have your period.

I would, however, strongly suggest going to talk to a doctor yet. Stressing out over this will delay your period longer. Best of luck, sweetie. Next time you should have mentioned to your doctor that you were on birth control :(
Wait a few more days, your period fluctuates based on stress levels, eating habits, sleeping habits etc. Antibitotics are known to deplete the effectiveness of birth control pills but not so much that you should completely worry, it is good to look into it though. It has only been a few days since your period, so sit it out, wait and if you still dont have anything, try a home pregnancy test just to ease your mind, or see a doctor. Birth control can be iffy sometimes. I am not sure about the test, but a clinic would be able to tell you if you see them. Good luck and dont worry, it's only wednesday, try waiting a little longer, and i hope everything turns out alright!
Better take the test ! I dont think it will show a false reading
As you know, antibiotics can cause birth control to fail. However, any birth control is not 100% effective. There have been cases of false positives, although the the chances are low. A great site to visit about false positives is www.peeonastick.com
yes you could be preggers ,antibiotics lessen the effects of birth control... its always smart to use a condom to double protect yourself [been there ,done that]
you could be, try a test right away.
It can happen! Antibiotics can counteract your birth control.
That's the exact combination that produced my nephew Bobby 14 years ago!
