Does anyone know the best hotel with reasonable rates to stay at on the big island of Hawaii?

i get all of my hotel rooms there... i think the smallest savings was around the 50 dollar range! they are a little scarey bc you cant see which hotel you are staying at untill you book it but i have never stayed in anything i wouldnt go back to!

The definition of "best hotel" and "reasonable rates" can vary widely. Also, there are two major visitor areas on the Big Island -- Hilo and Kona -- in addition to several bed and breakfasts and vacation rentals (particularly in the Volcano area). Where are you planning on spending the most time? East Hawaii (Hilo, Volcano, Honoka'a, Hamakua) or West Hawaii (Kona)?
If you ask a local, the answer to "cheap hotel" is usually Uncle Billy's (www.unclebilly.com). It's not the Bates Motel, but it's not the Hilton Waikoloa, either. If you plan on spending most of your time out of your hotel room, though, why splurge on a resort? But if you're the type of person who likes to luxuriate in a hotel room all day, you might want something with a few more stars in its rating.
A mid-range hotel I'd recommend on the Hilo side is the Hilo Hawaiian (there are only two large-ish hotels on Hilo Bay). I'm not as familiar with the Kona side.
