When should you tell a child ...?

I think you should let them believe for as long as possible. They are only children for such a short time. Why try to hurry them to grow up.
I have 4 kids and with all of them I did not tell them at any given time that Santa,etc. was not real. They will eventually ask you about it because they heard it from someone at school or the playground, etc. That's when you can tell them in a positive way that Santa does not exist in person, but he represents the spirit of Christmas in us all. Same with the easter bunny, tooth fairy, etc.

My daughter is 8 and we just told her a few months ago. But I have a nephew that is 10 and he still believes. I think somewhere around 8 or 9 yrs old is good. I was 8 when my parents told me.
When they ask you if he's real...that's when they are doubting and ready to hear the truth.
i think you should let them find out on their own. my nine year old still doesn't know.

I can not believe all of the people who say 8 or 9. I had this figured out for myself, without asking any questions, by the time I was 5. And I was p*ssed! If your child is bright enough, they figure it out a lot sooner than you are giving them credit for. I would say as soon as you see ANY doubt, tell them the truth.
It ends up being anywhere from seven to eight. Usually they come to you - don't volunteer info.
