I'm trying to decide which pain medication to use for right after birth?

I'm going to have a drug free childbirth, but once our baby girl is born I'm going to have some type of pain medication. What kind of pain medication did you have and would you recommend it?
With my first child they gave me demerol, and I was really out of it :(

Answer:
Acutally it is you that decides what you put in your body!
Tylenol was okay for me but honestly, the best pain reliever for me were the ice pads, and I took sitz baths! the nurses give you a type of bowl that fits into your toilet, it is very soothing and can be very healing.
Look on line for herbal sitz bath herbs...they will promote healing. I made a natural concotion of sea salts, chamomile, calendula, etc. You can also buy them online. You just boil water then steep then, wait for it to cool to a temp you can bare, and sit down to relax, it is cleansing too.
Also make sure you take the stool softener they give you, that helps too! After birth you wont need anything really strong...
good luck and congrats about your drug free childbirth plans. they say doing plenty of kiegels during pregnancy helps with healing and getting back to normal..
you may not get to 'decide'. The doctor has a list of usual orders for all his or her patients, and you take what is ordered for you. Ask your GYN. Best wishes for you and baby, and family.
I was given a high-strength ibuprofen, but I also had an epidural. Still, that ibuprofen was all I received for pain in the days after her birth. You will have to ask your doctor what options you have to see if you can get something stronger. Hopefully there is something that won't make you loopy but will still work well for a while! That darn ibuprofen would have me hurting again after a short while, and they would only let me have it every six hours!!
You should ask your Dr. & tell him what happen when you took demerol. There is other types of pain medication you could take.
I do not know what it feels like to have a baby vaginally because i had my son via c-section. They had me stadol before i had him then they had me on a morphine pump but i couldn't take that very long because i was out of it (talking crazy stuff out of my head) so then they gave me 2 percocet 5's (5mg) every 3-4 hours which helped a bit but nothing really helps after you have been cut open.
I was sent home on lortab 7.5mg..Pain meds will help but not completely after having a c-section.

It is whatever you think that you can handle but it is really up to the hospital what to give you. I didn't ask for any of the above meds (i did for pain but not by the name of the drug)
Good luck
Ask your doctor at the next visit. I was given digesic after my last child ,it is or was 15 years ago ok with breastfeeding. But panadol, ice fingers(ice cubes made from the fingers of gloves) a rubber ring to sit on if you have stitches, are a good start. The worst is if you have already had a child and you get afterpains while breastfeeding.hot packs are helpful for this.
