5 week old baby with a cold, please read this and help me !!!!!?
1st: my baby is sleeping more actually a lot more than ussual, is that normal for a baby witha cold??
2nd: im not sure how often i should give the rice cereal to my baby in every feeding,or only late at night ?
Answer:
Yes it is very normal for your baby to sleep more with a cold, They don't feel well, and sleep its the best thing for them! Also the medication could be causing drowsiness.
Second part I would give your baby he rice cereal at every feeding if your baby has reflux bad, and spits up all the time. If it only happens at night then I would only give it to them at night. It will not hurt your baby to give it to them at every feeding. The cereal could make your baby sleep more to. Your baby gets more of a solid in there stomach (rice cereal) and does not need to wake up as often to feed.
I hope this helps. I know having colds sucks, we all have them in my house! Mother of one and number 2 on the way!
1. Everyones tends to sleep more with a cold.
2. Ask your doctor about feeding.
I really do not know. I would definately go to the Dr. asap
Sorry baby is sick, it's miserable for them and you.
1. It's ok for the baby to sleep more, their immune systems is probably working over time and sleep will help.
2. I would give the cereal at every feeding, since reflux shows up at feedings.
Good luck w/baby and you rest too.
Yes it is normal to sleep more when they are sick. Just think of when you are sick... Want to sleep more, right? As far as the formula and rice cereal. I think that's a weird recommendation for such a young baby because of reflux. I mean I'm not saying your doctor is wrong, I've just never heard of it. I would call him and clarify what he wants you to give your baby though. Good luck with your baby. Make sure you are on top of the cold and if the baby's symptoms get worse, definitely go back to the ped. b/c with such a young baby there is always risk of RSV.
yes babys normaly sleep a lot more then they are not feeling well. umm about the rice cereal i am not sure i never did that with my baby.but i guess u could give it to ur baby evey other bottle or i would ask ur pediatrician.
Two separate questions. First, for reflux, you should give the rice to your child at every feeding. Although many tell you that it is hard for the baby to digest (and it is) it is better than reflux which often keeps them up late and makes their throats raw. When my daughter was diagnosed with reflux we gave her rice and put her in a special reflux mattress (a mattress with a 30 degree angle and a harness they strap into to keep them upright). She slept so hard and long we ended up taking her to the ER because we could nto wake her up. After many tests (she slept through the blood draw!) they concluded she had been so exhausted after seven weeks of no sleep due to reflux that once she finally had relief she zonked. BTW, she slept through the night ever since!
My 8 week old is doing this also. She is sleeping a lot more than usual...
Since baby has a cold, he/she (not sure, sorry) may just be trying to rest, kinda of like when we have a cold.
Rice cereal is usually the first cereal that is started for babies. Maybe every feeding, maybe not, it would best to ask your pediatrician to be certain.
I hope your baby feels well soon.
The pediatrician should have told you how often to give the rice cereal,I suggest you call her /him back.As for the baby sleeping more than usual,I think the cold meds prescribed contains sedative
rice cereal probably only once a day, babys digestive system is still very immature. Dont worry about baby sleeping more, if baby is able to sleep, it's good, that just means that baby is comfortable enough to sleep. Sleep is a good thing when ill. Good luck, i hope baby feels better soon, i know it's really hard to have a baby sick at such a young age.
the sleeping could be because of the cold and/or the medicine or it could be because of the cereal, my kids seemed to start sleeping a little longer once I started giving them cereal. as far as how often, give the cereal everytime you give the baby formula--it makes the formula a little thicker so it is easier for the baby to keep it down--my youngest also had reflux and i did that with his formula.
1. Don't be alarmed by the extra sleeping, unless he's sleeping all day and all night...or he seems to not be coherant when he is awake. The decongestant is probably making him drowsy. Watch for fever and alert the doctor to any fever since the baby is so young.
2. Give him the rice cereal (or oatmeal cereal) at every feeding. He's five weeks old, so he can handle a little cereal. 1 teaspoon is not a lot.
Good luck, mom! You and baby will be fine!
I suggest that you get a second opinion from a pediatrician it sounds like you don't trust this one. I have never heard of feeding a 5 week old food. That goes against anything I have ever learned about babies. How did the Dr. determine reflux did the child have any Fluroscopy studies? If not I would love to know how the Dr. figured that one out. I say dump the Dr!!
Sickness tires them out and the medication may also tire him out. The more likely reason for him sleeping alot would be the rice cereal (it's filling and he's just not hungry to wake up). I would just give him the rice cereal at bed time but the best thing to do is phone your doctor and ask him to be sure. It's rare that they recommend cereal at such a young age (it's hard on their tummies to digest) and it's better to be certain about how much to give without stressing their bodies out.
The sleeping is normal I would think..between the cold and medication, baby needs more sleep. I know when I have a cold I want to rest...just am not able to. lol
As for the reflux, I defer to other, more knowledgeable parents. I have never had any experience with it, and I come from a family of 7 siblings, I have 2 daughters, 16 nieces and nephews and 10 great nieces and nephews!
Good luck! I'm sure your baby will be just fine, now and in the future!
1ST: COMPLETELY NORMAL
2ND: i WOULD SAY WITH EVERY FEEDING SINCE THEY HAVE REFLUX
Im not sure about cereal for a baby that young, But I used to boil rice and use extra water to make rice water for the bottle and a tad of sweetner, then lukewarm chicken broth bottle also for my babys colds that seemed to work fine. I tend to shy away from meds for babies. Sleep is part of the healing process.
The cold meds will make your baby tired
I would give the cereal every feeding
Good luck, having a sick baby is hard!! :)
It's ok that the baby is sleeping more. When children are sick they sleep more, plus the cereal in the formula satisfies them more and helps them sleep, too. My son used to spit up his bottle if I didn't burp him every ounce he took. I had to put cereal in my son's formula when he was 3 weeks old, he wanted to eat every 2 hours! Putting the cereal in his formula made his sleep better, and he didn't want to eat as often. He's 22 now, and still wants to eat constantly! lol Good luck
u give her the cereal only at night.yes when there sick the sleep alot my 2month old just had a cold and got those drops to they make them tired so they sleep alot plus sleeping helps there body fight the infection off.
