Why are does breastfeeding bother so many people?

I have breast fed all my children and have very healthy girls as a result. Other mothers have said things like "It's gross" or "It's too hard". It's so easy, what's the problem?

Answer:
They have bought into the sexualization of breasts and have a difficult time seeing them used for their intended purpose. Seeing Victoria's Secret commercials on TV, major cleavage on the red carpet in Hollywood and dental floss barely covering them at the local swimming pool is considered acceptable.

BUT..latch a baby on to them..even without showing more than an inch of flesh (more likely from your midsection and not your breasts)..and people freak out. They've lost sight of what is NORMAL and HEALTHY and have some major hang-ups that they need to deal with.

It's sad that what is biologically normal for our species is considerd "going above and beyond" and instead shoving an artificial nipple in baby's mouth to feed them formula (which is usually made from COW'S milk) is considered normal. Cow's milk is for baby cows people! It's an ALTERNATIVE and should NOT be considered the norm.
it is kinda gross. but i think it's worth having a healthy child.
Beats me!
Some people either don't have kids and don't understand the importance of breastfeeding for a baby while other people are simply idiots.
Americans are ignorant a lot. IT is the best thing for a baby, my 3 kids were all breastfed for at least a year. it is healthy and natural. Part of it comes from the sexualization of breasts, and puritan/holy roller christians think of it as sexual. Anyone who is against it, or offended is an a**. I am an American, but a non-ignorant one.
My wife was asked to stop breastfeeding in a resturant. I find it insulting that as a 34 year old man I can not make the decision to suckle on my wifes breast in public
One of the biggest problems people have with it, IMO, is that breasts have become more a piece of sexual equipment than the purpose they were originally intended. to serve. A great pity, I think.
i don't think there is a problem with breastfeeding a little baby, and it is much better for them anyway. i have 3 boys at the moment and breastfed all and i do it in pubilc and i don't care if others have a problem coz the child needs to have there drink too. people these days are just to closed minded.
Its an american thing, other parts of the world do not have a problem with it
I completely agree, there are so many benifits of breast feeding, it's a shame that it has such a stigma attached. I guess most people think of breasts as a sexual thing nowadays, which is a shame really. I also breast fed my daughter, and I believe she was much more healthier because of it, and we built a much closer bond, than some bottle fed babies. Plus there's no dishes, you don't have to heat them up, and with a good pump, you can actually pass on the job to daddy. I've also met many mother's who chose not to breast feed, simply because it's "gross" or "embarrassing".

Although we can't force our opinions on other mother's, I do think that women should at least try it, it's the most natural thing. I do know many women who did give it a real good try, and weren't able to for different reasons, but at least they did try. It's a shame that something so wonderful, so natural, and so healthy is just passed off, because of the way society has decided that boobs are only for calendars, and tight tops, and video clips. Sad really
Because some women don't know what being a mother is really all about.

I think it makes people uncomfortable if you do it right in front of them, which is understandable. I always say, if you HAVE to do it in front of the world, make sure you cover up with a blanket.

I completely believe in breastfeeding and think that women who don't are only putting their children at higher risk of disease and malnutrition.
There isn't a problem with breastfeeding, we are all different people and some of us like to know things. When I had my first boy, I wanted to know that he was getting enough food in his body to help him to grow to big and strong. Having a bottle there to see how much intake they are getting make a lot of mothers feel like they are giving their child the right amount and feel good. On the gross thing, a lot of people is okay with women breastfeeding but they don't want to see it. It comes with respect for yourself not everyone thinks seeing a woman's boob is sexy, as long as you cover yourself and the baby while you are doing it no one cares, it is just when they have to see your boob that makes it gross. But that is what makes this country we call home (America) so great we don't have to care what others think, we have the freedom to do what ever we please and not give a care about other people values and beliefs. It is okay to be different but just respect yourself and others and things will turn out great.
its because people have sexualized breasts so much.
when they finally get it through their thick skulls that breasts are first and foremost for babies nutrition instead of for adults pleasure i think attitudes will change greatly
your so right
I dont understand what the problem is either. But I think it just makes people uncomfortable as they see breasts as sexual even when they are doing their job, feeding a child.
My brother wouldnt talk/look or be in the same room as me if I was feeding my girls. He thinks its gross.
It doesn't. Where are you getting that idea? Some women just don't like it or can't do it.
I am nursing my daughter who is almost 17 months old. What makes ME mad are the people that actually think we're molesting our babies! That shows just how ignorant and sick some people have become. I totally agree with you on the "easy" part. There's NO way my lazy butt would be getting up in the middle of the night to stumble down the hall and make a bottle HA!
People tend to forget that the purpose of breasts are for feeding our babies and not for sexual benefit.
It does seem ignorant to think it's okay to have your b/f hanging from your nipples for no purpose but not your child for their nourishment!
I breastfed my daughter for her first 9 months of life. I was scared at first because breasts are seen as sexual and not as providing food for a child that I would be considered molesting her or something crazy like that. After she was born, I didn't care what anyone thought, I was doing what was best for my baby.
