What is up with how parents name their children?

I mean, it seems that people either pick the most popular name (thus ensuring their child will be one of 4 emmas, or jacks, or hannahs, in their class), or they go the opposite way and make up a name that no one will ever be able to spell or pronounce. I guess I should be glad - my child with his traditional name will be the only one his age!

Answer:
Some parents want there child to stand out with as unique if a name as they can . Some are concerned with whether the name they pick for their child will be made fun of. Some name their children for family. Some like the traditional names but want to change them up a bit so they are not the same as everyone else. There are so many reasons why parents name their children what they do.

What amazes me is some parents don't think of the impact of a child's name beyond them being a child. Imagine your child having to introduce them selves to a client or a prospective employer. Hello my name is Rainbow Sunshine.
I say let parents name their kids what they want to name them without outside interference.
My boyfriend and I enjoy picking out names for our future kids that are classy and traditional yet not overused. A happy medium is the way to go with this. It's important that you like the name and it goes well with the surname... but I think it's also important that the child will feel neither boring with a trite name nor uncomfortable with something nobody has ever heard of.
what does it matter to you? I'll name my child whatever I like no matter if you cant spell or is to popular.
Exactly, isn't it annoying? Parents these days using "h" and "z" in names that doesn't even belong.
they like the name so they name their kid that.
Perhaps one of the reasons some names are more popular than others is because it fits the child very well. Joshua, Brian, and Emma seem to fit many people very well, as far as I've seen.

Other times, the names least popular fit the child better. Names can vary on religion, origin (where they're from), etc.
it's the parent choice. so what if there are a lot of people with the same name? it's not like it's bad
Let them names there kids what they want they are there parents.
Yes, some of the "creative" ones are a mouthful!

On the other hand - old traditional ones that had fallen out of favor are unusual too. I'm sure no one knows a US child named "Hermione" that is younger than the Harry Potter books ...
Yenno, no matter how much you complain, parents are still going to name there kids Apple, Lunar Lander, and Freakhead.
Parents these days (more young ones) are trying to give there child a name that is different, yet not so different that they would be made fun of.
For example, my daughters name is Scarlett. Not weird and made up, but a bit of an older name yet cool. It works!
But I also like Katie, Liz, and common names like that.
But if your kid is named Diamond Sparkle Jewel, than uhhh you may have some issues.
Yay for my explanation!
I don't care what others name their child, they have to yell "Apple come in for lunch", I don't!
They name there kids with names that they like. I liked both of my kids names and I didn't choose them by what was popular and what wasn't. Every kid makes there name unique even if there is 4 of them in one class.
Any name is ok. Names like Apple are just too strange.
Well since you threw in that "one of 4 jacks" I'll respond. My son's name is Jackson. When I named him I knew of one person named Jackson. I had liked that name since I was a little girl...I always knew that would be my son's name. And if he was a girl he would be called EMMA! I think parents name their kids what they are named because they like that name.
I have a highly unique name that often people pronounce wrong but I dont care because I am glad noone else shares my name
Let parents name there kids what ever they want. There are people with very unique names
I'm Gealic, so I named my daughter Aine. Unfortunately, it's a traditional spelling, so no one will ever be able to pronounce her name properly by reading it.

I have a normal name, yet a lot of people miss-pronounce it anyway. I don't think it really matters how it's spelled; people will always misspronounce names, regardless.

When Aine goes to school, I will request that beside her name, the pronounciation will be placed in brackets.
We just tried to go with something that won't embarrass my daughter once she gets into school. Jennifer Robin.. she will go by Robin because my mom is Jennifer, I wanted her to be a namesake. I think it is funny you mentioned Emma... we named my dog that a few years back. :-)
