Should pain-killing medication during childbirth be banned?

Genesis 3:16 (RSV)-- "Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply your pain in childbearing; in pain thou shalt bring forth children."

God decreed that women should experience pain in childbirth, so to prevent that is to oppose the will of God.

Note that this is NOT my viewpoint. I'm just illustrating ONE of the things that could happen if the 35 year trend of increasing religiosity in politics continues.

Don't think that it's an absurd notion. Back when anesthesia was first developed, in the 1800's, religious conservatives DID argue that to use them was contrary to God's will. Just like they argued that vaccinations, whoich prevented contracting illnesses that one otherwise would have gotten, was interfering with God's plan.

Religious conservatives are always in opposition to every progressive advance. Give them enough power that they'll do everything they can to turn back the clock to the "good old days" of the Puritan colonies.

Answer:
It's a good point. In my experience with christian conservatives though, they only support or oppose something until it touches them directly - then they become moral rationalists and start doing whatever they hell they want to do. And you know what? They can STILL cite scripture to support whatever it is they are doing that they initially said they should NOT be doing. That is, in fact, the beauty of scripture: it can be interpreted. Already in the US as you know we've got christians running our politics who are throwing roadblocks in the way of gay marriage (what happened to love your neighbors?), stem-cell research (the same folks who are pro-life), and whatever else you can think of. I don't mind debating any of these issues - what I mind is a certain group of folks acting as though they are the ONLY ones who are allowed to interpret the bible. There will probably always be those people, but I sure hope they don't get elected into office in 2008 (not a chance after the last 2 terms!) At least in America we can also always count on someone selling illegal drugs for childbirth if the right-wingers go too far!
Leave the bible out of it and let women choose for themselves. You can't and won't change the world because some book you live your life by says so
Did God not create the person who created the pain relief?
That person is here for a reason...and I thank my lucky stars for who ever they are.
I can't wait for the Christian women out there to queue up to answer this. I think I'll pour myself a stiff Scotch.
Just a thought... when I see religious conservatives opposing something I don't often find that it is based on Scripture. Mostly, their opposition is based on church doctrine and not a literal interpretation of the Bible. Just a thought.

And, as one who has had a child and would like to have another. Please don't ban them until I am done. Ouch!
Go preach to the Scientologists.
You know what? Some people need it. My sister had her blood pressure skyrocketing, and she would have died had they not given her some pain relief.

Besides which, not everyone is Christian, and YOU can't make that distinction for them.

And also, a lot of Christians don't believe in original sin. I believe none of my ancestors' mistakes can infringe upon MY life. Therefore, so what is EVE had pain? I want my meds.
I do not believe that pain-killing medications should be banned during childbirth because God gave the people the knowledge to create the medications used.
That's a very good point. I also think that when people suffer strokes that doctors should not intervene by giving them aspirin because after all, the Bible did not say anything about intervening in God's will for the sons and daughters of Abraham. And those who need heart bypasses should not get them because, once again, not addressed and therefore not allowed by the Bible. Actually, let's just throw away all modern medicine, since, after all, none of it is condoned by religious teachings.

In that case, then 1 of every 4 woman who delivers a child should die in childbirth, just like during Biblical times. We can go back to when there were only 10 million people on the face of the earth and the cockroaches and rodents can outnumber us.

So yes, let's have the Bible and religious teachings dictate our use of technology when it comes to medicine. Love it, let's go there.
Well I don't think it should be banned. I know God knew the world was going to change that is the good part it is all part of his plan. No matter how much meds they give you at some point during child bearing you will feel some sort of pain. They just make it easier on you by giving you temporary pain relief. To each her own.
well God probly thinks we suffer enuff raising the lil monsters .. so he created ppl, to invent pain relief for us !!

thank God
I take it you are male. Only a man would ask that question, not someone who had suffered 30 hours + of labor. Does god want hundreds of women and babies to die in child birth as that is what used to happen before medication.
Actually this part of the bible is why I don't believe in religion a loving entity would not put so much suffering onto a person.
You are obviously a man.

No it should not be banned. That is a terrible thing to say, I don't believe God really wants us to go through such pain, I don't care what the bible says. I used pain medication when my kids were born and it made it a wonderful experience. I wouldn't have done it any other way.
