Is there a specific hormone that is released during birth between the mother and the child?

Is there a medical term for maternal instinct?

Answer:
You've never given birth, have you...
What an absolutely fascinating question. Certain hormone levels change at birth but they are the same ones you've had all along. Too bad there isn't a special hormone that causes all mothers to instinctively be good, protective, loving mothers - but if you look around you'll see we (mothers) vary quite a bit in our mothering. Early nursing and nursing on demand do increase bonding (maternal instinct) do to the hormones related.
