My kids wear sneakers. They wouldn't wear dress shoes in a million years, but they also don't wear uniforms. Jeans, t-shirts and sweatshirts are about it (they are boys). Some of the girls at their schools wear sneakers too, but they also wear clogs, boots, crocs, etc.
The shoe that's the best is one that has good support around the whole foot and is properly fitted by trained staff. You can still get fashionable school shoes that are safe and a good fit but aren't dress shoes - just go to a reputable shoe shop.

I agree if you're implying those extremely high heels that are in style these days. However. There shouldn't be a specific proprer shoe. It should be the kids choice, every child's foot is different. But, if your going for classic looks and comfort go for keds, however not many people approve of their appearance.
