I just got this nightlight, but I still can't sleep by myself. What should I do?

I am scared to be alone in the dark.I'm almost in the 5th grade and I think it is time I sleep alone. But I can't!

Answer:
This might be hard but you need to think to yourself about WHY you are afraid to be in the dark and then figure out if its really a good reason.

Is it because you are scared someone could get in the house? (check to make sure all the doors are locked- you know its not likely goign to happen, you are safe.)
Are you afraid of monsters ( you know they are not real)
Are you stressed? (did your mom yell at you? you know she still loves you. Did you start a new school? you will get used to it, it takes time.)
Is is because you think your parents are gone? (they are just in the other room, same as if you were watching tv alone. You can always get up and wake them up if you need them.)

Perhaps instead of just a night light you'd like a flashlight? You could put it under your pillow. Or perhaps you would enjoy listening to quiet music or a audio book/story while you are in bed.

Talk to your parents and let them know you'd really like to sleep in your own bed but don't know why you cant.
Perhaps you should try not to do it all at once, it actually is harder to stop all at once (called stopping cold turkey) instead of gradually.
Perhaps try sleeping in your bed every other night instead of every night, or try laying down in your bed at setting a time that you will allow yourself to leave (aside from bathroom breaks) Example: you will lay in your bed until midnight and then can leave, the next week make it 1:00, and the week after 2:00.)

But above all just try and do things when you are ready, don't feel bad because other people do and you haven't yet, everyone is different and does things at different times, you will do it when you are ready and with a little practice.
Good luck :)
There is nothing wrong with sleeping with a night light no matter how old you are. Keep your night light on, and happy dreams.
I am old enough to be your grandmother and I sleep with a night light. I have them in the Living Room, Kitchen, and Bathroom so I am not totally in the dark.
So it's okay to have a light on while sleeping. I have a 11 yr. old grandson who is in 5th grade who sleeps with a lamp on in his room.
just get over it and pretend there are angels next to you gaurding you. Well that's what i would say to you. Or ask your mom to buy you a lamp it would be brighter but not that bright so it would be perfect.
well for my cousin which is the same age as you.
he just started to sleep by himself also
he was afraid at first.
he usually has to fall asleep with the TV on.
maybe you should try that.
lights off but have the TV set to a timer.
Its okay you should have things in there that comfort you..i leave the tv on mute and put the sound of the vaporizer on and the fan on low and u bring stuffed animals to bed..that is comforting and lots of pillows comfort me..everyone is scared of the dark u are not alone the rest of the world feels the same its being scared of the unknown...maybe u could take a flashlight to bed or leave a small lamp on ...i don't see a big deal if you did those things...take care and don't be so critical on yourself..you are normal!
It is OK to sleep with a night light all your life and it makes sense that you want to see and it is OK to sleep with your parent sometimes if you get really scared, this does not mean you will never live alone, my daughter's all live alone and they slept in my room up till they were teenagers at times.
No hard feelings man, I'm in the 7th grade and I still am -terrified- of the dark. my 5 year old sis makes fun of me..but come on? Its not a big deal..
Its ok I was like that too. Ask your parents if you can leave the TV on or listen to music QUIETLY. To help you fall asleep. Even try to put cucumbers over your eyes to soothe your mind to sleep. And if that doesnt work, try a psycologist.

Hope that helps!
