How much homework is appropriate for a 3rd Grader?
I'm wondering if this much homework is normal for 3rd grade or if my daughter's teacher has gone overboard? My daughter is overwhelmed and quite frankly, so am I. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks! :-)
Answer:
Sounds to me the teacher has gone WAY overboard! My sons only had 15 to 20 minutes of homework in the third grade (now they are in 4th and 6th). I think the schools now are trying to push the kids way to hard AND expect the parents to teach them what they don't have time for in school because of all the "extras" they do. (like field trips, plays, projects..etc.) I think you should have a talk with the teacher and let her know how your daughter is getting burnt out and overwhelmed because the next thing is hating school and giving up because of all the work. ps. don't you love all the projects you have to do at the "last minute"? and buy the stuff for it?
depends on the 3rd grader some kids learnt very faster and some kids dont
sounds like that teacher's lost her mind! O_O when I was in 3rd grade, I was done in like, an hour with all my homework!
I guess it all depends on the teacher. I can remember having teachers who were book report happy and then the next year I would have less homework with one teacher even though I was older. If she is really truly stressed and feels like she can't handle it I would suggest calling for a conference with the teacher. You don't have to try to dictate to her how to handle her class but explain to her that you daughter is feeling stressed and see if she would consider loosening up or at least she can gain a little perspective into how you as parents and students feel on the other end. If the teacher is just stubborn just look at it this way, the summer sure will feel better than ever and your daughter will be on smart cookie! Although I'm sure she already is. Good luck and God Bless:)
Sounds like quite a bit. You never gave a time amount (hours) - I would imagine that anything more than 1 hour a night for a third grader is excessive.
Try setting in on a parent/teacher meeting and express your concerns your child may suffer major meltdown... or better yet, help your child sit & make learning a partnership with you.
DEAR ALL DEPENDS ON HOW MANY TEACHERS HE ARE SHE HAS AND HOW MANY CLASSES THROUGH OUT THE DAY TIME COUNT HIS ARE HER CLASSES THEN YO WILL KNOW HOW MUCH OK EACH TEACHER GIVES A SUBJECT AND HOME WORK FOR THAT SUBJECT FOR THAT DAY AND IF A TEST IS COMING EVEN MORE THAT I CAN TELL YOU OK GOOD LUCK AND HAPPY NEW YEAR TAKE CARE
It may be in your best interest to find out if all the other students are getting the same amount of work. It may be that your child is not getting all her work done during the given amount of time. Third graders should be doing around 30-45 minutes of homework per night. The reading is the most important. If she is struggling with reading then you need to talk with the teacher.
I also have a third grader, and luckily he doesn't have that much. But in first grade and kinder garden he was loaded down like that. I know how you feel. Tell her teacher shes getting stressed and see if she ll lighten the load a bit. I guess it all depends on the teacher. Some go a bit crazy with the work because they want the home/ school cooperation, but it can easily turn into the problem your having..
Rule of thumb is ten minutes per grade. For example:
Kindergarten: 10 minutes.
1st Grade: 20 minutes.
2nd Grade: 30 minutes.
3rd Grade: 40 minutes.
I teach 5th Grade, and I'd say that something like 30 minutes on average would be acceptable. Some days of course will be heavier, some lighter. I think you should set a time to speak with the teacher and see what's going on. Is all of this homework? Or, is there time to do the work in school and it's just not getting done? Ask for suggestions on how to help your daughter work better. The teacher may not be aware of how long its taking to do the work. When you speak to the teacher, be sure to communicate that you are both on the same side; be positive in your approach and you'll have a good conversation and probably accomplish more.
Good luck.
My daughter is in 3rd grade and gets 1 math sheet (20 problems) most every night, a spelling word exercise (use each word in a creative sentance, write each word 3X each etc), another exercise depending on the day and 20 minutes of reading. To be honest, she got more in 2nd grade.
Kids this age should read for at least 20 minutes every night (reading is the root to learning). 15 minutes of homework like stated above is not nearly enough. My kids had more then 15 minutes in Kindergarten.
Homework is supposed to be approx. 10 mins per year of school each night. So a 3rd grader should have about 30-40 mins of homework each night.
If she is feeling overwhelmed, then make a policy with her saying that she can't spend more than 2 hours on her homework. If her teacher throughs a fit, schedule a meeting with him/her, and tell him how she is feeling. Or the other outlook...
Is she not finishing her work at school? Maybe that's why she has so much homework.
i live in the UK and work in a daycare, the children who come home from school are doing homeworks from 3.30pm until they go home at 6pm i think its rubbish! they spend all day in school with work why do they need so much, and i cant even do have the homework they are doing, its so difficult some of it!! its a real shame that children go to school 6 hours a day and then homework all night then dinner and straight to bed.
My daughter has a math page everynight, she has to write in a journal everynight the teacher picks the topic and she has to read for 30 minutes everynight also. My 5th grader gets about 2 hours of homework everynight I think that is way too much.
did you talk to the teacher. most schools have policy on home work.
