Topics for children's books?
Answer:
i think we need more books for children to read about the dangers of wandering off and alcohol and smoking and relationships.as i feel the younger they learn the more street wise they are nothing to scary but to the point .i talk to my children about these things but my friends don;t and my kids are very stranger aware and street wise and not smoked or drank the eldest is twenty youngest five(i have eight)
Here are favorites of my students. Humor really sells a story, especially in the first chapter. But many books start off with a funny episode and go into exposition, and their interest wanes. I think that's why so many are drawn to adaptations of other stories--like the Sisters Grimm (fairy tale detectives) and the Lightning Thief (Greek myths) and Dragon's Breath (frog prince). They already know the set up, so they don't have to endure a lot of exposition to get to the good stuff.
So...retellings are always good bets. They also like books that are a little scary, but have funny parts too. And dragons. I think half my class is reading a dragon book right now, between Dragons of Deltora and DragonRider and Dragon Slayers' Academy. But there is such a hunger for strong, well-written fantasy, from second grade level and up. Part of me thought it was just a fad that went along with Harry Potter, but it's still going strong.
I can't seem to get them into historical fiction this year. In the past I've been able to sell it, but this year, they will have nothing to do with it. Is there a local historical site you can write about? A neat story that's told to tourists, that you could flesh out?
Good luck! I know how it feels when your own ideas are monotonous. I'm avoiding my real writing work right now...
My 4 year old grandson is crazy over Caillou. I think he actually relates to the character. He loves imagining what he will be and do when he gets bigger. We make up lots of stories to tell each other too and they are always happy and include his dog or soccer or tee-ball. Kids have an amazing imagination.
Well..many times bullying starts in grade school. Maybe write a story about that? Or how about a book with lessons on friendship?
