Question about tics in children?

My step son is 7 yrs old and we just recently got visitation of him. We already knew that he had autistic tendencies from his teacher. He is in a special ed class as he is labelled cognitively impaired. His mom wont really talk to us (or even just my husband) about the issue. My question is about the tics we are seeing in him. He has several different physical and verbal tics and we don't really know what,if anything, we can do about it. We don't tell him to stop or anything. It's just something we noticed and have discussed between the 2 of us. His tics are : constantly wiggling either all or just a one or two of his fingers, clearing his throat, making a noise I cant really describe with his nose, and making the 'T' sound. All these when he does them only last for under a minute but they are repeatedly throughout the day. Everything I have looked up points to Tourette's Syndrome. My question is , does anyone know of any site I can look up that does not point to that?

Answer:
Children with autism often "stim," which is self-stimulation. This can manifest in many ways, including the ways you've mentioned. It could be Tourette's, but if your stepson has already been identified as possibly being autistic, he should be evaluated by either a private psychologist or his school district. Please look into this as your stepson may be eligible for services he is currently not receiving as a result of a confirmed diagnosis.

Good luck! I think you're great for caring so much about your stepson. :)
Your best bet is to make an appointment with his doctor and go with him next time you have visitation rather than trying to diagnose something yourself.

my cousin has had tourettes for a while. she is on medications that are supposed to help her ticks not be so extreme. good luck.
If everything you've looked up so far points to Tourette's, then that's probably what it is. You(or your husband) should try once again to talk to her. If that doesn't work, I would call Child Protective Services, because she is hindering possible treatment, for something that might not even be Tourette's. Best of luck to you.
why are you looking for solutions yourself? ask a doctor. and why are you trying to get a something other then tourettes? it sounds to me like thats what he has. there isnt much you can do about it. sometimes it goes away on its own.. sometimes it stays for life.. id just get used to it if i were you.
most "tics" do point to tourettes, however, many can be simply signs of his autism or even touches of an OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder).
i would consult with a professional, or at the very least, his teachers, about these tics and what may be causing them and ideas on how to help him.
just b/c mom won't talk to you guys, a shame, really, doesn't mean that his teachers or caregivers can't. they can and you can also take the time to seek out some professional help.

take care:)
See a doctor!
