How much homework does your first grader get a week?

My son gets about four hours (more or less) worth of homework a week, including reading, math, spelling, family projects, etc. and I was just wondering if this is normal for a first grader.it's been so long since I was in first grade I really don't remember. I was just wondering if this is average for a first grader or if he was getting more or less than other first graders.

Answer:
Sounds like a little bit on the too much side. My 1st grader gets his homework sheet on Mondays and has homewordk every night except Friday which is his spelling and vocab test from the words given on Monday. It takes him anywhere from 10 min to 30 min depending to finish each night.
When my daughter was in first grade, she had 2-3 hours per NIGHT! However, she never had homework on Friday. She also went to private school, so I don't know if that had anything to do with it.
My little sister is in the first grade. She goes to a public and she gets five pages of homewrok a week it takes her about 30 minutes to do it all but it wassupposed to take her about 2 hours
When I was in first grade I have about 1 hour of homework a night. So I think your child's time in fine. Now that I'm in older grades I get like 4 ours of homework night
that is stupid and I would talk to his teacher. He is a child. He is already in school full time. Do adults bring their work home.. no... I can't believe it, 4 hours a night. In grade one my daughter was to read a book a night. that's it. Occasionally if she didnt' finish something in school she brought it home and finished it in 5-15 minutes.. There is no way i would accpet that much homework for my little kid.. that is ridiculous...
As a teacher I ask the children read every night and if they have refused to complete work or been off task I send that as an extra. I teach year 1.
mine gets 1.5 hours a day
they learn at a more advanced level nowadays
When my children were in the first grade they received tons of worksheets to color/draw/answer. It was a busy year. By comparison, the second grade was just the opposite and they thought they were in heaven!
Australian with 2 kids who just finished Grade 1. Homework consisted of 12 spelling words to be written every night Mon-Thur and a maths sheet to be finished before Friday (given mon) it took 5 min tops. I thought this was too much until I read the answers in here. Other schools I know didn't even set homework in grade 1. Homework to us (my family) is optional. I like them to do the spelling but if they don't get to the maths I don't care. I explained to the teacher that I would prefer my kids to be out playing. They work hard all day at school they don't need to be coming home to work more. The have afterschool sports several days a week and they want friends to come home. Homework is not a priority to us. At the moment they are 6-12 months ahead of where they should be. If they were to start falling behind I would reasses it but at the moment this works for us
That sounds like A LOT of homework. The general rule is that a child should be getting about 10 mins of work per year of school each night. So a first grader shouldn't have more than maybe 15 minutes worth of work nightly.

Does all of his work seem to have a clear point, or is some of it busywork? Is everyone getting the same work or is the teacher giving him extra work for some reason? Or is he not finishing work at school and bringing it home? Or is he struggling with it or wasting time to make it take so long? I would suggest contacting the teacher and finding out how long she expects them to be spending on this work every night.

Last year, in first grade, my son had homework 4 nights per week. He had a spelling assignment (copy words, write sentences, etc.) each night and a math worksheet each night. On Tuesdays and Thursdays he had a reading assignment as well, so those nights did take an extra 10-15 minutes or so. So total, for the 4 nights he had work, would have been maybe 1.5 to 2 hours for the week.
Our first grader gets about 30 to 45 minutes worth of homework each night -that is if she sits right down and does it but I have seen her take a couple hours to get it done. Sometimes they have a hard time just doing it so it takes a lot longer.
My daughter gets about 2 pages a day, and each Monday a list of spelling words for a test on Friday. 4 hours? That does sound like alot.
Sounds about right. About 45 mins a day and that includes reading which is about 15-20 minutes.
My daughter is in first grade. They have a reading worksheet where they have to read 20 minutes a day for 4 days (M-Th) She usually gets a math page 2 times a week, and we have to study for her spelling test everyday. So I would guess 40-50 minutes a day.
OK my son got homework in 1st grade after the winter holidays.

it cam home on Monday and was due on Friday. We spent maybe 20mins a night on homework. Maybe you need to talk to the teacher . That is to much homework for a first grader. He will have enough homework later on. you're first grader get more homework than my 6th grader. That is alot and the best thing you can do is talk to his teacher. Good Luck
My first grader gets 20 min a night Monday through Thursday. Four hours is way too much for a first grader.
it is nowadays, my boss's daughter is in 1st grade and she gets homework every single night, probably about an hours worth. i never had homework in 1st grade, that i remember. i think it crazy
My son gets about 30-45 minutes worth of homework . he has spelling words to write 3x On monday and Tuesday and 1 pg of Math. On Wed-fri he has to make a sentence with hte spelling words plus 1 pg of math. If he doesnt goof off 30 minutes.
My daughter never got homework in first grade. The only thing we had to was reading out loud every night with their readers.Homework was set in year 2 easy homework reading practice spelling for tests and projects- easy homeworkagain in 3 and then much harder homework with sentences and sometimes maths.and projects in grade 5 and 6 .Also reading for half anhour.Donot know what grade 7 will bring because we are still on school holidays.Should not have homework grade 1.Junior kids get tiredand need a break from thinking.
My 1st grader brings home two pages a math each day, except Friday of course, and he brings home a spelling/reading packet every Monday that is due by Friday with about 7-10 pages. He also has a spelling test every Friday so we have to study his spellings words also.
