How did you motivate your 13 year son to work in school?

My 13 year old is not motivated to do anything in school. His standardized test scores are at or above grade level, but, he's getting F's. He was not motivated last year, and this year is worse. At school he sits there and does not work. His interests are friends, computer games and TV. I've tried punishment/rewards and other things, but I haven't been able to make them work.

Your success story with your son (or daughter) would mean a lot to me.

Answer:
This will work, trust me:

I called the city and they agreed to let my 12 year old "intern" for a day with the garbage workers for the city. He just rode around with them and saw what life was like without an education. They talked to him a lot too when they found out why he was there and really encouraged him.

The next weekend, I got a friend of mine who is a banker to let him spend a 1/2 day with him. They went to a nice lunch and spent the afternoon in a nice, comfortable office.

This was 3 years ago and completely changed his mind and attitude toward education
Rewards and tell him good job when gets good grades it helps and trust me I'm in middle school and and honor student cause of my parents motivation and it helps.
I'd go with what Katherine said. Sounds like good advice. Good Luck to you.
well my little girl is not even two so i cant tell you my story but i cant about my little brother when he was at school my mum was so angry at him he would nt even listen so she ended up taking all his games and foot ball and all his fab things away even his tele out of his room and he was stil being the same thinking yeah right mum you will giv them me back soon so then my mum pretended that she had sold all his stuff lol she neave really she just put them in the loft and then she grounded him untill he got good grades and then she started taking him to school and picking him up and he was nt even alound to watch tele down stairs cuz when he got home from school he had somert to eat and sent to his room soner or later his grades was getting better and better and as he passed each test he got somert back and naw hes 16 and stil geting good grades he does nt dare to it again
My grandfather gives me $1 for every -A, A, or +A, that i bring home and i need money to go shopping so it works. I'm his same age and it is hard to be motivated when you really wanna just sit in front of the tv or the computer.
make him read some tony robbins books
and don't let him on the computer or watch tv.
money
TELL HIM THAT YOU WILL TAKE AWAY HIS COMPUTER. OR YOU CAN TELL HIM TO STUDY WITH HIS FRIENDS TO MAKE IT FUN-ER. I KNOW A TWELVE YEAR OLD WHO IS VERY SMART BECAUSE SHE STUDIES.
I'm 13, and my parents want me to do less schoolwork. I work until 8 PM on school some days. Though, this, is probably because I don't like TV, video games, and I don't have any friends. Luckily, without any distractions, I have had the time to plan out my entire future.

Yet, there is one thing missing: my happiness.

One is motivated by the situation one was brought up in and remains in. This cannot be changed easily. I suggest that you bring up to him his future and what it would be like if he didn't work hard.

Largely, one can only be motivated by oneself.
