Our Girl Scout troop is trying to do a play/skit on the Chinese New year, Does anyone have any ideas on this?
Answer:
Since Chinese New Year is based around the coming Spring and the lunar cycle, you could do something about either of those topics. Ten year olds should have already learned about the phases of the moon, so they could brush up on their knowledge of it and write their own skit about it.
There is a lantern festival on the full moon. The girls could decorate the stage (or whever they'll be performing) with their own paper lanterns (http://www.learningpage.com has super easy directions on how to make them) and even come up with some sort of dance to go along with it.
They could research the many greetings that come along with Chinese New Year (lots of different languages involved) and show how people who speak different languages can still share a common bond with celebrating similar traditions (http://www.wikipedia is a good place to start w/the greetings).
You could attenpt a play on the legend of the Chinese New Year. Basically, it's a short story of how the Chinese people chased away the fearsome "Nian" monster by making lots of loud noises and having lots of bright lights. Till this day the Chinese celebrate Chinese New Year this way through firecrackers, lion dances and turning on the main lights in the house for several nights.
dO THE PROVERBIAL "DRAGON" AND HAVE EACH GIRL WHEN IT'S HER TURN POP OUT FROM UNDERNEATH AND MAKE A STATEMENT.
LIKE GIRL #1- "HAPPY NEW YEAR THEN STATE IT IN CHINESE
GIRL#2- THE YEAR IS THE "YEAR OF THE PIG"
AND SO N-- I AM PRETTY SURE YOU CAN LOOK UP INTERSTING FACTS/TRAITIONS ON THE NET- AND FIND ENOUGH THAT ALL 10 COULD SPEAK A PART.
TAKE 2 TWIN SIZED SHEETS AND DYE FOR THE BODY-TAKE A TV.TOASTER OVEN BOX AND PAINT DECORATE WITH EYES AND MOUTH FOR THE HEAD (DEN MOM WOULD WEAR THIS IN) FOLLOWED BY THE 10 GIRLS UNDER THE SHEET. DECORATE THE SHEET (DRAGON BODY) WITH FEATHERS,GLITTER, HAIND PRINTS, ETC AND THEY CAN POP OUT FROM UNDER AS THEY REPEAT THEIR LINES FOR THE SKIT.
IT'S SOUNDS HARD- UT I JUST DID IT WITH 22 1ST GRADERS IN SCHOOL FRIDAY.
BEST OF LUCK
