!0 year old thumb sucker. HELP!!?

My 10 year old sister has had a habit of sucking her thumb since she was about six months old, not only does she suck her thumb but she pulls on her hair, and sometimes even eats it, and now sports a huge bald spot on the side of her head. We thought she would out grow it, but as the years past it seems less likely, we are concerned that she will have a permaneant bald spot, what can we do to help her to stop this terrible habit without damaging her self esteem? What could be her problem?

Answer:
With the thumb sucking you could try having her always keeping her mouth busy like gum or life savers. With the hair pulling, if she continues to pull out the same area of hair for 3-5 years it will stop growing assuming the root is also pulling out not just breaking close to the scalp (I'm an esthetician, when you wax for a long period of time the hair will stop growing in that area). I would take her to the doctor and tell him that she is eating her hair, he might have an answer to why she's doing it.
thats a disease when u eat ur own hair. take her to a doctor tell them its not going away, they need to do soemthing. asnd if they give u b/s then u gotta be aggressive. thats not normal. and the thumb sucking thing, tell her no more sucking on her thumb. if u have to then put something nasty tasting and hot on her thumb so when she sucks, she cries and washes her mouth out. and tell her no more thumb. keep repeating it, and it will go away. good luck !
The thumb sucking isn't a problem...a lot of ADULTS suck their thumbs, just not in public. The hair pulling sounds like an obsseive disorder...your parents should take her to the doctor and question him/her about it.
