If you want to know what is going on with him, ask him. It could be there is trouble at home and would appreciate a friend noticing something is wrong.
Let his parents worry about it? You cant punish him or reward him. Just be his friend and let parents and teachers worry about the rest.
try talking to him and ask him why he is acting like he is and maybe its just a phase hes going through
