How high is too high of a temperature?

My 5 year old sons temp went up to 104.0 last night and its normally 97.1. Also any suggestions on how to get it to break i'm doing the tylenol and motrin thing but he's had this temp since saturday, the lowest it will go is 100.0. Thanks in advance

Answer:
Way, way too high. He has an infection of some sort. Call the doctor immediately. When it spikes put cool (not cold) cloths over his body - rub them gently over his body to try to cool him down. If he's had it this long, take him to the emergency room. I wouldn't fool around with this. Good luck. (It's probably nothing major, but fevers are not be be ignored, especially if they last more than 24 hours and never get back to normal.). Please let me know what the Dr. says.
Way too high calle the doctor if it goes over 102
A child that young anything over 101 you should go to the doctor.
104 is too high. You might try putting him into a warm tub of water. I'd take him to the doctor if it doesn't go down soon.
take him to a doctor!
Tepid bath and tylenol or motrin.
Personally I would take him to the doctor and have him looked at.
Better to be safe than sorry.
You should definitely take him to a doctors - 104.0 is high.

Hope he feels better.
104 is high, but not terrible. My son tends to run hot like that too. If his temp is responding to Tylenol, he is probably okay, especially if he acts more like himself when the fever is down. If he is acting sick or you have a gut feeling that something isn't right, I would take him to the doctor in the morning. I put a link below to a great site on kids' health...
104 can lead to brain damage, anything over 102 is dangerous
Take him to the emergency room. 104 is way too high. Do not wrap him up in blankets or hot clothes. Have someone drive you if possible and use a cloth soaked in alcohol or even water to wipe over his body on the way to the doctor.
Normally you should take him to the Dr. so that you can find out the reason for the fever. But, if he is just catching a cold there isn't much a Dr can do for it.
A couple of things I have found to work though is give him a bath and then let him air dry can help. Another way to help pull it out is an alcohol rub and let it evaporate on him. Another thing is give him some baby aspirin.

To anybody that will say something about it, yes, I know a fever is caused by an infection or something wrong somewhere in the body.
No, sweetie, it's tme for him to see a doc at any temp over 102. My Mom's an RN. She says if Motrin doesn't break it in a day's span, then he probably has either an U.R.I. [upper respratory infection{kind of common in school kids}] or another virus like the flu. It's that time of year again. AND ALWAYS ALWAYS if you aren't certain it's NOT a virus - don't take chances!! Take them to the Doc. It's better to be sure than regret it later on.
over a 103 and he should go to the doctor especially if you can't keep it down. It sounds like he has an infection and his body isn't fighting it. He needs antibotics. Also to help bring down a fever a cool bath (not Cold) or cold compresses to the head, hands and feet work pretty good but again he should see a doctor. 104 is way too high.
take him to a doctor. 104 is way too high
Your son needs to go to the hospital. A technical fever is 102, but over 103 is considered bad.
A temp of 104 is definitely too high. You should have went to the E.R. At 102, the extreme heat can start to affect brain function. I have a lot of R.N's and CNA's in my family and they say to never let a temp get that high. Give tylenol/motrin and keep the child covered up and let them sweat it out. It is a little uncomfortable but it works. Pile on the covers and keep it on them.
Any fever over 101 I would suggest that you do the tylenol/motrin thing. If this fever lasts for more than 3 days I would consult your doctor. A fever of 104 I would again do the tylenol/motrin thing, but I would contact your doctor right away (or in the morning).

The fever is your bodys natural defense of fighting germs. Bacteria and viruses cannot live in places that are too hot. So the body picks up a bacteria or virus and the body tries to kill it by heating up. If a fever lasts more than 3 days, I suggest that you contact your doctor. You can just call and they can decide if you would need to bring the child in or if they can just treat/give suggestions over the phone.

When your child has a fever, dress him/her lightly and do not use heavy blankets. This will let the heat escape. Also people believe that putting the child in a "cold" bath will bring the temperature down. This is true, but you have to know the right temperature. When your body is at 105 degrees, 98.6 is cold. So instead of a "cold" bath put the child in a tempid bath, water that is cooler then he/she is but that is not so cold that it will be uncomfortable for you child.

One thing to remember, that extremely high fevers (105 and over) can be devistating to the body and it could causee brain damage if it lasts for an extended time.

Also something to keep in mind that at high fever can cause cause a convulsion. Not like epilisy, but just a convulsion because the body gets too hot.

I wish you and your family a healthy and happy holiday and new year.
104 is high but usually more uncomfortable than dangerous unless your son already suffers from seizure (convulsions) activity or other chronic disease such as heart arrythmias or valve prolapse etc.. Above 104 is dangerous and often causes a child to seiz so monitor it closely.

This next part is not only for you but other parents reading these posts:
As stated, a tepid bath. (your body temperature) and let your son play in the water for 20 minutes. This allows the body to radiate the heat off into the water and bring the temperature down about 2 degrees. NEVER use an ice bath or cold water or alcohol rubs unless specificly done under medical supervision. Although this reduces the skin temperature quickly, it also causes the vessels to contract. The skin temp has dropped, the core temp can actually raise higher increasing the risk of seizures.

Make sure your son does not have an infection such as strep throat. Bacterial infections commonly raise the temp higher than virus but that is not a hard and fast rule. Vaccinations like MMR measles mumps rubella can have a delayed reaction that causes a high temp like this 7 to 10 days after the vaccination. If that is the case , we usually follow the outlined steps to keep it under control and it dissipates in a day.

In any event, CONTACT YOUR PEDIATRICIAN to advise them of his condition and follow their guidance. They obviously are familiar with your son's medical history and internet posts could never be the best advice without knowing his particulars. Ibuprofen or Acetaminophen syrups help to reduce temp. Do not give any aspirin containing product to reduce the risk of Reyes Syndrome.
i would give motrin then 2 hrs later tylenol then 2 hrs later motrin, keep alternating like that. no aspirin though.
104 is high, but it did respond to the meds, even if not completely gone it went down to a decent level.
you can add lukewarm baths to bring it down a bit more. never do an ice bath or alcohol rubs. the alcohol can actually be absorbed through the skin, especially if they are hot and sweatie which opens the pores more, and the fumes can cause lung problems. sticking a hot kid in an icec bath(or anyone for that matter) can induce seizures.
i would take him to the doc if the temp didnt start to stay down with in 24 hrs.
yeah that's a really high fever, take him to a doctor!
I have three children. In my experience 101 is the time to have them checked, most doctors will advise that a fever that high is more than likely causes by some sort of infection, ear, viral urinary. Have him to the doctor today. So he can feel better before Christmas.
104.0 in a child is high--but not unheard of. However, since this has been going on since Saturday, you really need to consult your pediatrician about this. If it spikes at or above this again, then you may need to take him to the ER, as this is a stubborn virus or something simular doing this. If nothing else--consult the doctor, and follow his advice, and do so today.
I know this sounds backwards but try warm baths and compresses. Don't let his temp go higher then that. If it goes up again take him back to the doctor. they can give him suppositories that may work better.
