I'm sorry, let me re-phase. She wants something other than skating and bowling..?

Answer:
If your daughter has a few close friends rather than a large group of them, I would recommend having the birthday at an inexpensive hotel. You can order pizza for dinner, and let them swim in the hotel pool, then watch a movie before bed.
try sleepovers they always work. If not try traveling.
What about a spa party for her and a few close friends? Some places run group specials, where they can have manicure, pedicure, facial with some makeup. It could be really fun, and different because she is becoming a "young lady" at 12 and losing interest in a lot of the baby stuff. (also helps you put off the boy thing!).
Let her choose a few friends take them to the movies
Swimming party(our local pool does these, water slide games etc. with a host to take care of the kids)
sleep over with videos and pizza
scrapbooking party
last resort...ask your daughter what she wants
You should re-phrase the whole question so that others who are not privy to the first part have knowledge of this new part. A better way of fixing the problem would be to go and edit or add new information to the first question.
