At what age should pocket money/allowance stop?
Answer:
When you start earning your own money, then you give us parents pocket money :-)
Er, in a word, yes!! If you are in full time education you can still get a part time job and start to be a bit self-sufficient. Or if you are in the UK you can get the EMA allowance which will help towards your living expenses. At 19 you can't expect your parents to give you pocket money!!
No, if the kid is still in full time education then pocket money should continue. The kid should be encouraged to continue with full time education and if the kid has to earn their own money then there will be less effort put into studying.
Legally in the U.S. you're an adult at 18. At 19 someone should be taking responsibility's and try supporting themselves for the future. I'd say 15 is a good age to stop the allowance.
um YES. Tell the kid to suck it up and get a part time job...Welcome to the real world
when the person in question stars earning money then the allowance should stop
I think it should have stopped when you left school as you would be old enough to earn money via a part time job at 16.
And if your in full time education you probably get learner funds, ema or something
an allowance should never be given, but earned , to raise a responsible child into an adult
In my opinion it should stop when they can work for there own money 13/14 get a paper round .You will never teach them anything if it is all handed to them and i bet you are paying for college/uni for them as well. when i was at college i worked 2 hours before college and 3 hours after it wasn't fun. But i did it so that i had work experience as well as grades the funny thing is the work experience has got me alot further than the grades ever did, hope I've helped answer your question.
Yes 19 is too old. They can have part time jobs at 16.
Definately yes! My 16 year old who is at college, has a part time job to earn her own pocket money!! Obviously I still cover college expenses ... but extra's she wants she must buy!!
i think 19 is still a little old for pocket money as he/she can get a wweekend job, although youre still getting family allowance so you could just give that to your child
Yes, at 16 they can get a Sat/evening job and it should stop then. Still getting at 19 is really spoilt!
16 or once they get a job
i guess it depends on ur job, what they do around the house to help out etc
i stopped when i was 16 but i did a fair bit around the house for my mum (without being screamed at!)
19 sounds bit old even tho in full-time educ. could get a wkend job etc but it depends on u - if u can afford to, want to then just go with what feels best but dont get taken for a ride! my little bro is 17, gets some money but does very little to help out, thats not very fair!
I think they deserve pocket money/allowance only if they are doing certain jobs/chores around the house...if they aren't "earning" their money, they shouldn't get it...especially at 19. After 18 years of age, they are "legally responsible for their own life".
Good Luck
I think kids should earn their pocket money and if you still have chores you want him/her to do to earn money that seems fine. But kids actually do better in school if they have a part-time job so that might be a better way for a 19-year-old to get "pocket money".
If he is doing well in school and doing chores because he is still living in the house i think it is ok
Is the money being used as pocket money, or is it going towards necessary things like textbooks and food? I'm currently in college and I can tell you that with core subjects, texts can go for about $100+ a pop, times that by about 4-6 depending on how many credits are being taken, and that adds up to a serious chunk of change. I blew ALL the money I earned working over the summer on textbooks alone this year, and had nothing left over for food to keep in my dorm, which could spell trouble if the college doesn't offer a meal plan, or if they have wonky cafeteria hours like my school does.
Long story short - if it is being used for extras like video games or CDs, then yeah, you really need to cut back on the parental assistance. HOWEVER, if it is going towards things like books and other college items, *and* you can still afford it, then by all means, help a college kid out. Because going for 48 hours without food really, really sucks.
Still give them money ( if they don't work) but encourage them to save it up for when they go to college and out on their own. My parents actually INCREASED the money he got at that age, but he saved most of it up for college or bought gifts and things for poeple.
i sort of have it at 16 i have it when i want it now like if im going out of somthing or for some clothes, i dont have it every week now
Probably around 16, when he/she gets a job. But, there isn't anything wrong with help out every once in awhile with school expenses.
Um, hello?!! 19 and still getting an allowance? You wanna be MY parents?! lol
Seriously though, you're actually doing your child no favours. How can they appreciate the value of money and hard work if they have a regular income?
Fair enough, they're in full-time education but, do you know how many kids are out there in the same position, putting THEMSELVES through school, as well as working?
Perhaps a good compromise could be getting your son/daughter to actively seek a part-time job and supplement it by doing chores for you?
at that age they should be able to get a part tlme job and cope with f/t education. i had to and managed to get a good degree
