Is Kindergarden Mandatory?

I have a 5 year old and his teacher and assistant principal of his school is always on me because my son has missed so many days of school and i think its dumb because he is my child and i think if I want to keep him out of school thats my right and I dont think other people have the right to tell me what to do with my kids.. help please(live in north carolina)

Answer:
It is your responsibility to send him to school if you enrolled him in school. Technically, since he is enrolled, the school can and most likely will contact Social Services if there are too many absences. That is their job to report anything odd. In NC, kindergarten is not mandatory but keeping him home for no reason is disruptive to his class and to him. Kindergarten is not a babysitting service that should be used when it's convenient for you. Kindergarten also prepares a child for 1st grade.

Either send him everyday or un-enroll him. You will however have to go through the re-enrollment for 1st grade (which is mandatory)
In most states kindergarten is not mandatory but might be in your state. If you dont want your child in school better get busy and set up a home schooling program. Starting in first grade if your child misses too much school they can(dont often but can) put you in jail or remove child from your custody.
Well where I live you could go to jail once they start Kindergarten it is mandatory and you could get in a lot of trouble if your state has any laws about this.
Actually, it is not your right. many states will arrest or fine you for not having your child attend school regularly.

If you have to keep him out, consider home schooling. If you do that, you will have to submit papers to the State showing them that you are meeting their requirements for education.

If you don't like the rules, move to a country where keeping your child out of school isn't illegal.
It depends on what state you live in. It's not mandatory where I live. BUT, if you enroll your child, there is an expectation that they will actually be attending school regularly. Not attending school when he is supposed to be there can hurt his grades and can give him the impression that going to school isn't important. Also, keep in mind that your child's absences can effect how much funding your school gets, so if they aren't for good reasons, you're hurting your school.

It appears that KG is not mandatory in NC. From the link below, "In North Carolina, as in most states, kindergarten attendance is optional. School districts are required by law to offer a kindergarten program for interested parents."
In most states Kindergarten is not mandatory... You should contact your local superintendents office to find out if it is required.
Either way... the principal is right. You should be getting him to school on time every day unless he is ill or has a real reason not to be there. Letting him skip now will tell him later in life that its okay to skip if you do not feel like going. This will effect is chances to learn and get a full education.
YES! Kindergarten is mandatory, and it is also essential and fundamental to your child! Why would you want to keep him from learning the basics he needs to learn in order to grow up with some intelligence and common sense?
Kindergarten is not mandatory but if you enroll him you are supposed to send him. Most states want you to decide either to homeschool or to send him to school- you can't just enroll him in school and then let him attend or not depending on what you feel like that day. If you'd like to homeschool you can sign a waiver but then he can't go to school. If you'd like to make an arrangement with the school so he goes part-time or something they might also be into that, but then it would probably have to be agreed-upon days and not whenever you feel like. If there is a legitimate reason for so many absences (illness- physical or mental, or another reason) you should just talk to the principal.

Like it or not if you choose to enroll your child in the public schools then they can tell you what to do. After all they are giving him a free education. It used to be (and still is in some countries) that you pay for your child's education. If you don't want anyone telling you what to do, then homeschool.
In the state of Florida it is mandatory that once a child is 5 they must attend kindergarten. I'm not sure why you would not want to send him to school. You are just hurting your child by not sending him to school, he will be so behind all the other children his age if he does not attend school like he should. Please think about what you are doing to your child as it will only hurt him in the long run.
I don't know about NC, but in KY, Kindergarten is mandatory, and if your child misses too many days of school THE PARENT can do JAIL TIME. Be careful of letting your son miss too many days unless necessary.
yes ..if you don't graduate kindergarten, you cannot possible go to first grade when all the kids know their ABC's hello..are you ignorant? is it because of your incompetence your child is missing school? why did you have a kid if you cannot be responsible enough to send this child to educate him...

Shame on you!
kindergarten is mandatory. you can go to jail for him not being in school. he is your child therefore its your rsponsbility to teach him that school is important.4 year kindergarten is not required but 5 year sorry you need to take him to school and get him prepared for 1st grade. he has to pass a test for first grade and right now the way your going hes gonna be in kindergarten again next year. school is required by law. home school or public / private school. schooling also helps build work ethic skills. being on time never missing all vital life lessons you are teaching him that only the rules he likes are important. like going to school this will follow him in to adult hood with working. he wont want to because he wasnt made to go to school. the school is right. stop being lazy and get him to school before your standing before a judge. and you have to answer this question. why isnt your child in school and by the way this lame story wont hold up in court
Kindgarten is NOT mandatory in all areas but you are being VERY selfish. I know you won't want to hear this what with it being "YOUR" child although it's his life your messing with but it seems you don't care do you? Do you even realize now that in kindgarten they learn to read. They don't go there and play all day they do actual work. It's hard for them and you being so darn selfish keeping your son out because he's 'your's' is stupid. When he gets to first grade he's going to be so far behind it's going to be hard on him. All the kids will tease him and call him stupid. But hey, that's your kid, I bet the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. I don't understand how you can be so selfish! Kindergarten is very important. I'm guessing he wasn't allowed to go to preschool either, I mean what's the point right? Nevermind that kids who do do well in life. But it's your kid...you have that right to make sure he doesn't learn. This question makes me so angry that I could go on and on but you won't care. Why should your child be allowed an education? He needs kidnergarten and he needs to go every day. And this may actually make you care because you're obviously not worried about the boy YOU CAN GO TO JAIL for keeping your child out. Or does that not matter either?
even if it isnt mandatory, it is a good way to get your child used to going to school everyday and interacting with other children. you can always homeschool and avoid the issue.
I think in most states, kindergarten is not mandatory. However, I think once you enroll a child in the school system, he is required to be there. Also, sending your child to school sporadically when he's enrolled is sending the wrong message to him, as well as possibly getting you in trouble as well. You might try homeschooling.
I think that's dumb but neccesary. You learn alot in kindergarten. But I DO agree that parents are in charge of their kids.
if he isn't enrolled as a home schooled student he must attend and if he misses too many days he stays back a grade and/or you could end up in jail...why does he miss so much? if you want him home then home school him but he still needs to be a registered student so he could be tested to see if he is at the right level for when it is time for college.
Jeez lady, why wouldnt you want to let your child go to school? Is it because someone is too lazy to get up in the morning with their kid?? Children need interaction with other kids. Making them stay home just cause "you dont want them to go" doesnt make you sound very educated yourself. Tell me, did you go to kindergarten? You spelled it wrong, btw. That was also a terrible run-on. Have a nice day.
Kindergarten is required. The only exception would be if you home schooled him. That is not as easy as some people think. You still have to follow a specific curriculum.
