I posted a question regarding my 10 year old that couldn’t sleep. I should have been more specific with my question. Thank you for all those that tried to answer but that wasn’t the answers I was looking for. My 10-year-old son is having a problem falling asleep. He has a history of mental disorders, which include bipolar disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, clinically tested adhd (not just the kind dr.s pin on a kid when there not sure) along with possible aspregers disorder. My son also has some heart problems as well. He has been on several medications most of his life some of which are supposed to help him sleep but its just not working. My son sees a variety of Dr.s several times a month and they are aware of the problem. Unfortunately there are no sleeping medications for children. I could put him on other psychotropic medications that are usually administered to children that have these mental disorders but I don’t want to add a heavy mood stabilizing sedative to the mixture of meds that he is already on. He has seen a therapist regarding this problem and they set him up with some relaxation techniques that don’t always work. I have had a sleep study done and it came out normal. My son does not have a TV or computer in his room or any video games that would be distracting him at bedtime. I don’t allow soda or sugary substances in my house. And I have him on a very strict schedule. As I do with all of my children. Nightmares are not the issue because in order to have nightmares he would have to be sleeping. I do however use a natural sleep substance called melatonin that was prescribed by his psychiatrist but that is not always affective. I know that this may be something he might just have to deal with for a while but it makes me feel bad when he is laying in there struggling to fall asleep knowing that he has school the next day. Let me know what you think
Answer:
Poor kiddo! My family has used Melatonin before as a natural supplement to aid with sleep issues, but have found that sometimes it will give you strange dreams or it will be effective for only a few hours and then you are wide-awake and unable to get back to sleep. With all of the medications he's taking (both prescription and non-prescription), you'd probably be best off trying some other remedies. One thing you could try if you haven't already would be to buy a soothing sounds machine that you could put by his bedside and play at night. My sister-in-law uses one for her youngest child to soothe her at night, and after experimenting a little bit found the sound that she best responded to. My son has ADHD and sometimes has trouble getting to sleep at night, and I know with kids like ours sometimes its just that their mind is going a million miles an hour (and we can definitely relate to that as moms!) and they just can't get relaxed. You could also try having him take his shower or bath just before bedtime to see if that relaxes him, or do the thing our moms always told us to do and have him drink some warm milk. You could also try spraying some relaxing scents in his bedroom; I think lavender and peppermint are supposed to be calming scents. One last thing to try, and I know this may sound counter-productive, is to have him take a nap when he gets home from school, probably no longer than about 45 minutes to an hour. I know it sounds weird, but if he is too over-tired when he tries to go to bed at night it may actually keep him from being able to fall into a natural sleep. Good luck to you and your family, and hope this helps!
I use melatonin for my 10-year old son as well.
I give him 3 mg about 2-3 hours before sleep, and he's out like a light by 9pm!
Meds are a tricky business... my son has ADD, and I have fought the docs so far about giving him "drugs"... homeopathy seems to be working just fine. :)
