What is adolescent OCD? I need help with my daughter.?
Answer:
ok, my son has autism spectrum disorder with ocd tendencies. this is how it was explained to us. normal people have the ability to filter through each of the 5 senses.. you can taste your food and hear your conversation at the same time with out being too overly stimulated. however, autistic people do not have the capability to filter thru them all. so just as much as they can taste their food, they can hear every noise at all tables within hearing range, they can smell the paint on the wall, then can feel the cold air from the vent 10 feet away. this can make them invert (severe autism) or act out in OCD ways. This is called Functioning Autism. My son is taking zoloft for the OCD and therapy for coping with the other symptoms. I would check into this because everything you listed that bothers your daughter, is sound (like you said) and it overpowers her. With my 5 year old son, it is smells. In fact, when we went into a restaurant that was grand opening night, he said very loudly "oh mom it smells like dog poop in here." it was very embarassing.
Stop pumping your kid full of drugs. Start parenting. You get your kid diagnosed with all these conditions so that you can relieve yourself of the guilt of not being a good parent. Start looking at yourself instead of at your child's problems. You are the problem. If the sound s irritates your daughter, tell her to get over it because that is not how to function in society. Not everyone will be polite, if you baby her which is quite obvious since she was held back. You aren't teaching her to grow up, you are teaching her to be a spoiled brat that gets her way and you excuse every little thing claiming it's a disease. She is not super sensitive to sound you are super sensitive to her whims. You give in to her every demand. You should be ashamed of yourself. Take a stand with your daughter, tell her she is wrong sometimes. If you do not now, she will not function later, and it will be YOUR fault, not some made up phony condition you invented in your mind.
Okay, take her to a pedeatrician. What was she like as a child? If I were in the room with you I would be asking certan questions before I told you the next bit to see if I need to but all I have to go on is what you have written here, so please forgive me if I am completely wrong. She sounds as if she may have High Functioning Autism. I have worked with autistic kids and adults for years and then guess what? I had a son with High Functioning Autism. He wasn't diagnosed until just before he turned 9 but I knew at 2yo. Some aren't diagnosed until adulthood, take her now. So much can help her. It is not as drastic as it sounds. My boy has improved IMMENSELY. He is now drug free in mainstream school. Time, love, social skills classes, and a special diet (have a look at gluten and dairy free diets on the net, these kids are in much more controll without it, we have goat milk) do wonders. Take her and see if this fits. I'm so sorry if I've offended, but my suggestion stands. Take care.
if she's not out of control then why the adderall? i was diagnosed with ADHD when i was a child and i've never taken any medicine for it because my mother thought it was a waste of time. the placebo effect. what she did was taught me to focus and pay attention to my surroundings. the extra time she gave me and the tools she used still help me to this day and I'm 21. Obsessive Complusive Disorder sounds like what your daughter has instead of ADD. She focuses on every little thing instead of tuning it out. I'd take her to see a doctor for that instead of ADD.
Could also be SID (sensory integration disorder) A great book is "The out of Sync Child) Alot of these have some symptoms in common.
Good luck
it makes perfect sense my friend has OCD he says that he has to do those things or he'll get anxious! and start flipping out. he starts sweating and doesn't stop till he does his rituals. the rituals just make them feel more comfortable
My 10 year old daughter has OCD - here's a good website to check out... http://kidshealth.org/parent/emotions/be...
in my opinion it sounds like your daughter has ADD - I have a friend with ADD and she's the same way. I'd suggest taking her to a therapist to get a proper diagnosis. My daughter sees a psychiatrist for her med's and a therapist to help her change her behavior.
This is a side affect to the medication she is taking and could mean that she is over medicated. I would take her to the doctor. For those of you who are attacking this women you need to stop, you have no idea what she is dealing with.
Also there is a yahoo group that will be helpful to you called shadow syndrome children or kids. Try those two as a search. I am sorry that this is happening, I know how you feel as my son has hyper sensative hearing because he is autistic, but this is not usually a symtom of ADD, so it is probably the medication or she could be misdiagnosed.
