My 6 year old son stutters when he speaks. Anybody recommend a remedy?

He is in 1st grade and very bright. He use to do it before too but then stopped and all of a sudden he started again. I cant explain why??

Answer:
Owning a pet always helps.
A speech therapist will help. They are the professionals. Your son will never look back!
That was like me! It eventually went away though.

You could always seek a speech therapist.
I think it's alot like the hicups you need to try,and scare him. So tonight when he falls asleep go in his room with a shotgun, and fire a few rounds into the air. That should clear it up
My son did the same thing. Just ask him to slow down when he speaks. He may grow out of it. My boy is in 3rd grade now and he is still stuttering but his speach is much better. Give it time.
You should probably see a professional. Once in a while you get good advice on here, but there are so many clowns I wouldn't trust it for anything serious.
stuttering normally is caued due to the brain moving faster than the mouth.

I myself had a speach problem when I was young and it later turned into a slight stutter, few catch it.

I myself have a high IQ and dr's just tell me.slow down the thoughts and the words will form.

Speach class might help some also.teaches the mouth to full pronounce each word in turn making the brain work harder on each in turn slowing it down...results...less stuttering.

Also look into ADD as this can be a side item of high IQ. Its not that he can't keep interest.its fact nothing holds his interest cause he thinks above it.
I don't know why but maybe this will help:
Have him read to you. Maybe start with something simple. Find some books that he's interested in. Try this every night. It's a lot more cost efficient than a speech therapist.

Practice makes perfect.

I hope this helps some!
You do not need a speech therapist! Kids grow out of it. I I sur sur surtenly di did. - No, seriously.
go to a speech therapist
It's a form of a speach problem I use to have a speach problem I couldn't pronouns some of my letters right so I was in speach class that did help me I think you should ask to put him in speach classes that will help I still sometimes miss prononus words sometimes but thats normal he'll be fine get him into speach classes.
I have the same problem with my 6 yr old daughter, she is in speech therapy at school. She LOVES it and Mrs Sydney. She is starting to speak so much more clearly. I still have to tell her to Slow Down and Use Short Words. Using Short Words means she says one word at a time. It takes her a bit longer to get the sentence out, but it certainly works. Good Luck with your Son.
you should explain to your son that he is thinkin just a little too fast for his mouth to cope and say the words he wants. i had the same thing and it was mentioned to my teacher in 2nd grade, nad once i started actually THINKING about what i was saying it went away. i still start and stop stutter tho when im stressed a bit or all hyped up and im now 18! but it gets lauhed off and i just have to take 2 secs.
yea the readin idea is good. get him to read to you, even if its the back of a cereal box, it will help his words flow. dont worry about seeing a therapist unless it is stopping him from doin activities he does or his work suffers. Just explain he has a super brain that works really fast!
Are there any new changes in his life (new baby, more, school related problems, family issues)? Often times when children are stressed they will start stuttering. If you feel he is stressed, do whatever you can to comfort him. Don't tell him to slow down or repeat. He will only become more aware and begin to feel frustrated. I'm a preschool/kindergarten teacher and I have had several stutters. In several cases, there was a huge change or stress in the child's life. I had one student who started stuttering for about 4 months after her baby sister arrived and then it stopped. In many other cases with stutters, I felt it coincided with a growth spurt. Their bodies are just growing and learning too fast for them and it takes time to catch up. Their mind is thinking of words much faster than they can get them out. If there aren't any big changes or stress in your child's life, it's most likely a growth spurt that your child is going through. Don't finish his sentences for him because it will only cause frustration on his part. Pretend like you don't notice. Give it some time yet if he doesn't improve in a few months, talk with your pediatrician. Check out the Stuttering Foundation of America web site at http://www.stutteringhelp.org and read their tips on helping the child who stutters. Relax and good luck!
You should definately see a speech therapist. Some public school systems have them, so talk to his school. There has been a lot of progress in this area over the past 20 years or so, and the methods are very successful and sometimes a lot of progress is made in a little time. Good luck.
He just needs to slow down. Let his tongue catch up with his brain. It could also be nervousness.
