Do kids seem to get way too much homework lately?
It is like information overload for them... Sometimes they just need to be kids
What do you think?
Answer:
Yes. There is way to much homework being given to kids. It's awful. People are just expecting our children to grow up so quickly. My goodness...let the kids be kids. It makes me sick to think of the schools that have quit giving recess to the children. Give the kids a break! And it seems like teachers are not doing their jobs. They are sending all the work home and expecting the students to teach them selves.
I think really what it is is that kids are getting so burned out and that's effecting their grades, which is causing the school to want to ask more of the students which is causing the students to get burned out and so on. And this same topic was raised at my school just last year and basically what the school said was "Why should we lower our standards because the students are too lazy to learn" What the heck? Most adults in my life are more passionate about less homework now than when they were kids. I find that rather humorous.
And I am a Junior in high school this year, and what I love is that when our grades start do drop, the school takes it upon themselves to tell us when to quit our extra curricular activities and that we are spending to much time with our friends. Not even kidding. So I guess to them during the school year you are to do nothing but school and have no life or no fun, but just study, study, study. Even during the summer, you have to read 5 books and do a project over each of them for English and turn it in on the first day back (which no one does). I mean really, is there no end?
I don’t know what it’s going to take to get these stupid people to realize what they are doing to our children. For you to have two young children and never really get to do anything with them...that's insane. I mean, I believe in challenging kids academically...that's what school is for...but to just flat out overwhelm them and burden them and stress them out? That’s doing more bad than good. I mean really. For me to be 17 and have to take prescription medication for stress headaches during the school year? Is that not odd?
And I just thought of this...you know how I said earlier about teachers not doing their jobs (probably not because this is kinda long but anyhoo...)? Well a perfect example of that is my sister. She is in 6th grade and what is she currently doing in math? Pre-algebra. Pre-algebra! I did not do pre algebra until the second semester of 8th grade! But here's the catch: She did not know how to divide. Nope. Neither did her friends. Her school is teaching 6th graders pre-algebra and just leaving the kids who are stuck on something behind. As if math is not hard enough! The school left it up to my mom to teach her how to divide.
So yep...that's my little rant. Sorry it's so long!
Well when my child was in 6th grade they had so much homework. She's in 8th grade now and has about 3 hours worth. Its really hard with the amount of homework
Hey,
I certainly think so too. I'm in high school and spend a long time doing homework every night. I wish someone would change that.
I definitely think that kids get WAY too much homework. I think they should have one assignment per night up until 7th grade when they start changing classes. After that, I think that maybe one or two assignments, but nothing big. They should only have to study for tests. I agree that sometimes they do just need to be kids. If teachers were paid better, they would be happier with their jobs and they would be able to get more teaching done during school so the kids wouldn't have to have so much homework at night.
I don't think they get enough homework. Middel and High School grades are falling all over the country because of too many cell phones, XBox's, Playstations, iPods and such. I say give them more homework.
I agree I'm in 10th gradeand it's sucks how much I don't get do do with my family. The fact is right now for I am supposed to be doing homework I just can't do it all at once. I think it's ridiculous how much we get I can spend any were form 3-5 hours per day on homework. I rarly get to do anything fun.
last year when my son was in kindergarten he came home every Friday with a folder of homework. We never got to enjoy the weekend because of all the things he had to have done by Monday, and he was in kindergarten!! Most of the stuff was teaching him the ABC's, numbers, shapes, colors, ext.. The things I was sending him to school to learn, I though!! I homeschool this year. If I'm going to be the one who teaches him anyway why pay for public school. I save a bundle of money plus I get to spend more time with him too!
I totally understand you. I have a 11 year old in the six grade. and she comes home with homework every day and on weekends too. It's always more than 3 subjects and some work sheets. I recently talked to her teacher about it and she told me she gives them homework everyday so they can learn more.I don't get home until 6 in the evening and my daughter will still be doing home work at that time. I had to canceled some of her activities because of her homework because she was getting stressed out over homework.
yes, too much homework, and I just retired from teaching elem school. I was a single parent during those years and I truly realized how special time was outside the classroom. But I was rare both in being a single parent and in thinking there was too much homework. Kids must be kids. They need time to let down and play and experience. One thing is that often homework is dictated by the school, the teacher is demanded to give out so much per grade by the school districts policy. I never sent any homework home without previous, good instruction, it wasn't homework for the parents, it was for the students. Also, consider if your kids are reallly doing their homework or just whining and resisting during that homework time and extending it., but most definitely go to the teacher. Your parents, if you approach with "peace", have so much power. When I was teaching and needed something changed, I worked with the parents to get them to approach the school district. Parents employ the district's employees with taxes :) Don't let them forget this, especially those at the top.
Well, I think it's overwhelming how much different things are now then they were for me back in second grade. I don't remember getting homework til third grade and that was simple stuff I did in class all day. My daughter, whose in second grade gets on average 12-14 sheets of homework every night. She comes in grabs a snack and starts homework at 4pm and is lucky if she finishes before bedtime. She barely has time for a bath. I don't agree with these policies and competition between schools. I'm pretty well educated and got a childhood to remember. I think when my baby looks back all she's going to remember is school work. That is very sad. I will complain til I'm heard. My daughter deserves a life after school.
I told the teacher homework is not a priority in our lives. After school sport and friendships are more important. School is for learning and after school is wind down time. How many adults bring there work home with them. Everyone is worried about the rate of obesity but what do they do? Give them so much homework they cant get any exercise done. I told her to let me know if the kids are falling behind in any way and i will reassess the situation but they are both still in the top of the class and we are only weeks from the end of the school year. I think it depends on the child but I don't agree with homework
How much is too much?
My kids do homework when they get home so they are still in the "school mode". My 3rd grader gets about an hours worth on almost any given day and my 7th grader usually gets 1-2 hours worth. They both still have free time before dinner to hang out with other neighborhood kids but things like going to the YMCA or the movies etc. only happen on weekends.
I totally agree with you 100%. My 10 year old is in 5th grade and he has so much homework, it is hard to get it all done and have him in bed by a decent hour. He also plays youth sports, so between practices and homework, he is really pushed. He is doing work in 5th grade that I didn't do until I was in middle school, like algebra and geometry.
I'm in 8Th grade, and I think I defiantly get too much homework.I sometimes do homework until 10 or 12 at night. I don't think it's fair that we go to school to do work, then go home to do more work. I have no time for myself besides Saturday and Sunday;but on Saturday and Sunday,I have housework to do..
yes. i have WAY too much homework! i dont have a life anymore because all i ever do is homework.
Yes...bcos the society needs are growing..
Yes, I agree. My kids love to work on the farm and ride their horses but now they are stuck inside doing homework, (ages 5 and 7).!
My 6 year old 1st grader brings home about 7 pages of home work each night and we spend about an hour doing homework. I think that I way to much in the first grade.
