Does home school work? Why do parents think they are qualified to teach?

Not all parents are qualified. I think you have to be a certain kind of person to teach. A degree does not make a good teacher all by itself either though.
It can work
Some parents feel the need because they can control the kind of mind feed their child recieves. I'd estimate at least half of the things you learn in school are not useful or just plain wrong.
The problem is that the kid will grow up with some pretty poor social skills.
The solution is to enroll them in public school but stay involed in everything they learn.
Parents think they are qualified to teach because they are already teachers. What do you think parents do if not teach? They do get help and lesson plans and all kinds of assistance to do their job well. They only have a small number of students -the optimum learning environment at home safe and secure with no bullies or traumatizing experiences on the playground. Also parents who do teach take classes and expand thier education to fill in what they need to know at least that has been my experiences.
How interesting that you should ask this; I've just written a paper on it. The basic points are: Homeschooled children get better overall grades. They have more freedom to study their own interests. They are safer (no other kids pulling guns, knives). No teachers pushing unknown agendas on them.
A parent who has graduated high school and can read the textbook should be able to teach the subject. If there is one subject (say math) that the parent feels extremely uncomfortable with, he/she can hire a tutor.
maybe the parent feel like teaching there child at home than at school.....i had a family member just like that and he is a lawyer
It works pretty good. Who teaches children to talk? I think parents are more than qualified. For one thing I'd be willing to bet that the average person cares more about their own children than the average teacher cares about their students.
A better question is why is school attendance manditory. Why do parents have to get permission from the state to home school their own children.
Some people claim that it does. Most people who home school have more than one child they are home schooling. I believe the parents can get kits that have all the necessary tools and assignments that the home schooled children will need to qualify.
No it does not. I am a teacher in public school and I see kids come in that do not know what they need to, are socially repressed, and cannot behave in the classroom setting. I think parents do it because they freak out that their babies are going to be around kids who are doing things they don't approve of. This sets their kids up for failure and it is up to them to make it work. Not a good thing.
Most home schooled kids are smarter than kids taught in public schools. Why parents don't bother with political correctness or life is fair crap. The home schooled child has better social skills, better manners, and more mature attitude.
Why do you think they aren't? Who is the first to teach the child to walk, talk, run, jump? That's right...parents. We teach our children much more than schools do. We teach our children about morals, right from wrong, how to be honest, how to be respectful.
Home schooling works because parents care enough to do it. You can get work from the schools for the children to do.
I personally think kids need to learn how to socialize outside of their homes and family. It is unfortunate but bad things happen in life and just think how upsetting the world will be when a home school child has to see the world for what it is.
it works if the parent is committed to do a good job. To teach in public school you need a college degree plus a teaching credential which takes a year or two to get after college. If you have a degree, are smart yourself, and follow the lesson plans then there is no reason that you cannot teach your own child.
There are so many misconceptions about homeschooling. It's really sad that most ppl who are against homeschooling have never done any real research. They rely on anecdotes and very limited personal experience.

Does anybody worry a baby will not learn to walk w/o institutionalized instruction? If we don't use flashcards and explicit instruction, will a baby never learn to talk? Of course not! That's just absurd. Children have a natural drive for learning and are very self motivated as long and that motivation is not repressed.
There are many great sites on homeschooling and quite a few books. There are homeschooling organizations that can give you better data than the average joe on the street. And public school teacher tend to be biased b/c the homeschooled kids they see are often the "failed" cases.
As for socialization...I find it rather silly that some many believe children will only be properly socialized in a mainstream school. W/ all the problems w/ peer pressure etc, why is that ppl believe mainstream schools are doing kids such a favor? There are many MORE socialization options outside of school. There are a great many homeschooling groups that families can get involved in and then the children benefit from mixed age groups more than in mainstream schools.

Parents of homeschoolers don't see themselves as "teachers" as we know it (aren't all parents the first teachers anyway?), but as a "guide" of sorts to encourage exploration, creativity, and a deeper meaning of concepts.
One of the main myths of homeschooling is that it make kids socially inept- but often times these kids are more aware of the world around them because they get hands on learning experiences with people of all ages and from all backgrounds.
There are also homeschooling community groups out there that get together frequently to learn and share ideas and just hang out.
There are all kinds of different types of homeschooling. Some are very structured and are like traditional classrooms and other kinds encourage the student to lead the learning.
Usually families take on a mix of different kinds in order to make a style that works best for them.
Homeschoolers often finish high school around age 16 or 17 and are more likely to get accepted into the college of their choice. And there are plenty of notable people in history who were homeschooled, like Peter Jennings, Frank Lloyd Wright, CS Lewis, among others.
Many parents arent even qualified to be parents.
