Buy a dog for crippled child?

My five year old son has cerebral palsy and cannot walk. Would a small dog such as a pug be good idea for him, making him less bored and lonely?

Answer:
no. a pug is a BAD idea. but a beagle is perfect. pugs are often mean dogs. but every beagle I have ever known are the sweetest dogs in the world, very easy to train, very gentle, and very cute. my little sister now has a puppy, it is a beagle mix (don't know what it is mixed with) but it is the best dog we have ever had. (we have had 12 dogs over the last 4 years.) we had a pug at one time, and had to get rid of it, it was mean and nothing we did helped. but out of 8 beagles, we have kept every one as long as was possible.
I do want to add that a teacher at school raises guide dogs for a company that trains them. she had a black lab last year that is now with a 4 year old that is blind. the dog she has now is a border collie. we don't know where he is going yet. a trained dog would be a great idea for your son.
I think he would love it and recieve great joy from a puppy. Obviously he wont be able to care for him, but will always have a companion. I think instead of it being a dog JUST for him, make it a family pet.
My daughter has CP and is nonamblitory she is 13 she also has MR, we also have a healthy 8 month old. They have 2 dogs a large black lab and a brittany spaniel. The reason we chose these dogs is because they are the most "forgiving" and "passive" dogs we checked into getting for her. Alot of small dogs do not have the patients for children that can hurt them, ofcourse without meaning to. My daughter has pulled their lips, accidently due to muscle issues hit them and so forth and they just lay there as if they know she can not help it. Before you buy your child a dog make sure you research their breeds usual temperment incase your son accidently hurts the dog he wont get hurt back if you know what I mean. Bigger dogs also arent as fragile. I wouldnt trade my 2 for anything they are great w my daughter and great with my 8 month old. They are also very protective. If someone comes into the house they will stand next to her as if they are garding her. If she is not where they can see her, they go looking for her. At night when she is in bed if she goes before the dogs come in for the night the dogs will go into her room check on her and come out. In the mornings after they go out they come back in and if she is not up they go back into her room and check again. When she is in the hospital {and sadly due to disease progession thats been often lately} the lab will lay in her room by her bed as if she is waiting on Savanna to come to bed. They have never harmed her the most they do is lick her feet.

As for the lady above me that "oviously he will not be able to care for him" shockingly alot of people that have CP and are not able to walk CAN with limitations care for animals as well as themselves. There are different levels of CP from slight to profound depending on his level of involvment depends on his abilities
As long as an able person is able to care for the dog, I'd think it would be a positive thing, but you must realize, the dog will be more attached to the one who feeds it, than to the child. Still, I would recomend, but I am a dog-nut and have seven K-9's.

Unconditional Love!
I agree. I think it could be beneficial and act as a sort of therapy.. Just make sure what types of dogs are compatible with children.

Good luck!
Yes, I believe pugs are good with kids. Dogs are known for being great companions for people with disabilities. And a child, especially, wouild really appreciate the bond he would have with his little buddy!
Yes. That would be a very good idea. He may even like a bigger dog, like a choc. lab, or yellow one.
I've heard that animals in general really help children with disabilities. I don't have any real expericence with that though but from what I've seen on TV it's a real help. It makes them happy to have them. And I think I heard that it helps them learn better.
I just wanted to say that I think it's a wonderful idea!! Animals help people mentally and physically. I also agree with one of the other girls that you could get him a bigger dog if you want to. Good Luck and I think that you will be happy with your decision when you see all the smiles the dog will put on his face : )
I think a dog would be a great idea. Just make sure you do plenty of research as to what kind of do your going to get. My personal experience with pugs is that I would not allow one around a young child especially one that may hurt the dog with out meaning to. I have a black lab and she does great with my 5 year old. My daughter lays on top of her and everything the dog just lays there. You may want to talk to your local vet or SPCA and ask them some advice on what breed of dog would be the best choice for your son and the rest of your family.
I AGREE AND BELIEVE IN ANIMAL THERAPY IT IS A GREAT THING. IF YOU HAVE THE ROOM I WOULD GET A LAB, THEY ARE GREAT WITH CHILDREN THE SMALLER DOGS TEND TO NOT BE SO GOOD WITH CHILDREN.HOW ABOUT YOU TAKE HIM TO THE PET SHOP AND SEE WHAT DOG HE BONDS WITH AND THAT WILL PROBABLY BE THE BEST DOG FOR HIM. I WISH YOU THE BEST OF LUCK!GOD BLESS!
that is a great idea! I wouldn't get a fragile dog though.. we have a cockapoo and that thing loves kids and is great
Jacob,
A young lady at our church has CP and her parents not only got her a dog but a super Dog that helps her too.
Go to this site to get started on a long and rewarding friendship for your child and their dog...
Your idea is very good for your child. My son is special needs and he loves his two cats. The only thing you need to do is make sure that dog is family friendly. Because your child is handicap you can go through MHMR and get a pet especially suited for your child. There are programs out there not only for the blind but for the handicap as well, and they train the dogs to work with the childs needs. If your child has seizures, they train the dog to detect the seizures before they happen. If your child has a wheelchair the dog is trained to assit with door and what have you carry childs backpack for school. I would check into it.
oh yes dogs can make people of all ages feel much better. just the love and feeling of something soft and cuddly that responds to them can make him feel sooo much better. maybe a bigger dog too that is good with kids like a border collie. i suggest going to your local pound and getting a Dog and that way he can be a hero to a dog and find a big dog a new home. we saved a dogs life from the pound. the nurse told my son that he was a hero because he saved the dog's life. Hope everything is better for u all. you all are in my prayers.
