My 9 year old son has a fever & I can't get him to take Tylenol or Advil. He just throws it up after taking it
Answer:
when my daughter was poorly they gave her tablet antibiotics the only way she could take it was cut into 4 and taken with yogurt with large pieces of fruit in maybe this would help if not try something like calpol 6+ which is suitable for up to 12 years and is available as a liquid and taste of strawberry. Hope this helps
try crushing it up and put it in a glass of water
if you need to get a child's temperature down without medication one of the best ways is to get some really cold flannels and place them on their pulse points, eg on the wrist, and behind their knees plus one on their forehead, believe me it works but takes longer than usuing conventional medicine - hope it helps
i have a daughter similar, in the UK we have dispersable paracetamol, which you put in water, i mix mine with very strong cordial for her she cannot tell its in there so drinks it without moaning or being sick
I think it is called FEVERALL-not sure comes in a red box starts with the word fever I know. It is a suppository. If he cant take nothing by mouth, that is what the doctor will say a suppository.
Get medical help! Don't piss about with a bairn's health.
Use the liquid in a child disp. and open his mouth and pour it in! Do not let him spit it out!!!! My kids hate it but take liquid best!!! He is being stubborn and tell him a trip to the dr. and a shot is what he is getting for the fever if he does not swallow!! My kids cooperate at the word shot!!!!!!! And you are not lying to him, because if you cannot get the fever down, you will have to take them and after you tell the dr. he will not take anything they may give him a shot!!!!!! Try the liquid!! It goes down quicker!!! Use the shot trick! He'll drink it!!!!
try a freezie or a popsicle
Throw him in the freezer, that will bring it down.
if you dont take medicine orally then how do you?
think about it
I would check with a doctor and not take any advices you get on the web since it is your son health that is on jeopardy.
Aarg, I am feeling for you. My nine year old son has started taking one regular strength gel cap. (Our doc said it was ok, but I would check with your first) After a terrible time with a tonsilectomy, he has sworn off ever taking any liquid or chewable medicine again. During that experience we also resorted to suppositories. I know it sounds extreme but a portion of an acetaminophen suppository may help with the fever. They are available over the counter but I would check with the doctor or the pharmacist for dosing. Good luck.
Suppository (sp?) time. One of the least pleasureable parts of being a parent. Call his doctors office and they will steer you in the right direction.
Have you tried an alcohol rub?..That usually brings down a fever fairly fast.....CAT

Call your pediatrician and tell him your son has a tough time swallowing the medication...(my kids are the SAME WAY!) he may be big enough that he can take one Advil...they are small and sugar coated...and he may be able to swallow them.there is nothing you can try hiding medicine in that will not taste like medicine...i have tried it im sure!
If you want to try an herbal rememdy read up on Belladonna - i used that when my son was too young for other medicine.
I have had five children and vomiting and high temperatures are not uncommon at this age. Plenty of liquids preferably plain water. Keep warm but not hot. Sponge down to keep him cool.
Only give him food when he begins to recover. If the temperature gets very high, with headache and stiff neck call your GP.
awww, poor thing! Have you tried the liquid stuff? Good luck and I hope he feels better soon.
you can get something to put on their forehead from the chemist (or supermarket) Can't remember what its called, but they should know. Hope he's better soon. Good luck.
You can get the medicine in Popsicle form or you could at one point, I've given them to my eldest child in the past.
Tylenol has come out with new product that may help.

I often have troubles giving medicine to my child as well, I always tell him that it will help him sleep better and feel better.
well i don't know of anything to do that you haven't done, unless you could try a little strawberry milk with the medicine where you can try to match the flavors. other wise you need to exsplain to him how serious this is and tell him he will have to go get a shot or something. my son was the same way we had to hold him down and then if he did take it he would cough till he threw up.
but he was only 2 and 3 then so i have no idea besides talking to him and trying to mix it with something that is close to the same taste as the medicine. but good luck to you and i hope you find a good way to do this!! all my luck!
Our one year old had serious gastro and a temperature. She threw up every bit of paracetamol. We took her in Childrens A&E, they were more worried about her temperature than the gastro and gave her a suppository paracetemol. I suppose you caould always threaten him with that if he doesn't drink up his medicine.
Your child may be allergic to an ingrediant in the medications. Try cocnut oil and rosemary. It helps bring down a child fever
I had this problem with my son but he didnt throw up. Have you tried getting him to swallow? I finally taught my son to swallow, first starting with a tic tac. He can safely take a regular strenth tylonal if he is 9 years old. Get the caplets they go down easier. Good luck!
You could ask for a suppository, but also you can ask a compounding pharmacy for a 'rub', which will absorb through pulse points. At nine, as well, he could probably take just a tablet, my 9yo does, she has always hated liquid and chewables, they are disgusting!
Alternatively, just keep him sucking on popsicles and ice chips, have him bathe two or three times a day, just soaking. let him wear some boxers and a cotton tshirt, and make sure the hhouse is cooler. If he is still uncomfortable, you can say "You know, if you're not comfortable, this is what will help"
More doctors are agreeing that you shouldn't medicate a fever unless it's over 103...because the AAP has said that fever is what helps cure colds, it's your immune systems response to invasion and by suppressing it you actually prolong the illness.
If he's not uncomfortable or in pain, there's really no need to supress the fever just to supress the fever. Fever is our friend. It's the body's first line of defense against a germ, and sometimes all you need to kick it out. Dress him lightweight and have him drink plenty of fluids.
If he's really miserable, go to the pharmacy and get Feverall Suppositories - they're like Tylenol in a suppository.
My nephew was the same way. If we managed to get something down him, he would just throw it back up. Poor thing! The doctor started giving him suppositories and phenergen gel (you rub it on the wrists and is absorbed into the bloodstream). I completely understand your frustration, though. Best of luck to you!
if your child has a high temp then go to the dr's.they can help you from there.high temps not treated are dangerous and can damage health even further..please go to see your dr
I there know what you mean. we plan a game with my daugther to get her to take her meds. shes very sick and hates them. tell your son it's your and he can't have any then see if that don't work as far as his getting sick try letting him eat a cracker a slice of bread this helps my daughter keep hers downand please stay away from the sweet sugar stuff it's harder on them and doesn't do well at all when sick. good luck
This one is really easy. Firstly, stop stressing him out by feeding him something that's going to make him throw up -he is already ill. Secondly get some lavender essential oil and add a few drops to a bowl of tepid water and let him wipe his forehead with it, or lay a cloth of it across his forehead. Lavender is specifically for fevers to reduce temperature. While you are fetching that from the pharmacy you could get him some soft peppermint sweets to help settle his stomach, they are also cooling.
Have you tried having him swallow pills whole? The liquid tastes nasty, as does the chewables. At 9 he should be able to swallow the Tylenol JR that is whole pills. You can't taste them if you drink the water or juice right away.
