Can you breastfeed if your nipples are pierced?

Answer:
The piercing shouldn't actually have gone through the breast bud duct so it is still possible to breast feed. It may be a bit uncomfortable to start though as some scar tissue could have developed around the tube that carries the milk. However the piercing will almost definitely need to be removed during pregnancy as the breast will grow and the piercing is liable to either be pushed to the surface and tear through the skin or become tricky to remove at a later stage. Also for hygiene reasons and safety its not advisable whatsoever to feed a baby with a piercing in as
a) A part could dislodge, such as a ball bearing and the baby could choke.
b) The suction required for a baby to feed is difficult for it to maintain
c) Infection from the piercing to the baby or vice versa due to bacteria in the mouth and milk.
I have had them pierced. I removed the jewelry though, during pregnancy as they seemed to become irritable with my hormones and changing breast/nipple shape. I think the barbells/rings might possibly interfere with the baby's latch, not to mention the possibility of bacteria around the jewelry... SO if one were to make it through pregnancy and keep the jewelry in, perhaps removing the jewelry during a feed, or using a soft PTFE retainer would be the best solution... I'm sure the jewlery COULD be left in, removing it would be my personal preference (and I have little nipples lol)

* edit:

and the milk comes from all directions anyways, not just because of a piercing. hehehe. i never noticed milk coming directly "out of the hole" and when it does come out its littttttle tiny jets, so little and invisible...
the milk will still come out but it will come out from all directions like my sisters did!
Yes just remove the jewelry.
