What would cause a baby to be so stiff?

I take care of this 8 month old baby. His body is so stiff. You can't move his arms or legs without feeling like you're going to break them. He seems to be pretty behind in a lot too. For example, he can't roll over yet, he's just barely sitting up, even still, he falls over. Is this something to be concerned with? Worth talking to the parents about. He also cries all day, like he's in pain or something. Has anyone ever heard of this?

Answer:
YES~ I've heard & experienced this. Stiffness can be a number of things. Some serious, some not so serious. My son was born 3 months early and had to regularly be checked for these types of things, as well as participate in at-home physical therapy. This can be anything from Gas, to something called Hypertonia (high tone=increased muscle tension), the opposite being Hypotonia(low tone= lowered muscle tension). Regardless, like others have said, I'm sure the baby's parents have noticed, but you being the regular care giver, I'm sure you care about the child. And better safe than sorry, in case they haven't noticed. Don't be afraid to mention it politely! It'll just show the parents you take good care of the baby and you are concerned. I've also babysat for many years, and not only mentioned a few things to parents, but have been asked a few about my child as well.

"_____, I was just curious about your baby's muscle tone...I've read about high muscle tone, and wondered if I should be worried, or if there is something I can do during the day to help."
If they haven't noticed...at least you brought it to their attention and hopefully they'll realize they need to see a doctor.
At the very least, they've noticed and can tell you "why" to ease your concern. So ask! Hope all goes well and much props for being such a great caregiver!
No, Ive never heard of that, sounds like he needs to go to the doctor
I think you should talk to the parents about it cause there could be something wrong and the parents should take him to the doctor. I've heard of something like this but I'm not sure about what the condition is called.
it could be something as simple as severe colic causing him to be so stiff and crying as if in pain, my son had it so bad
with him being behind intellectually added to it though, I would definatly speak with the parents. it could be a form of retardation, Autism, or something more
He sounds like he has abdominal pain or something. Maybe if you tired a different formula. Babies stiffin up like that when they have abdominal pain.
This baby needs to be seen by a doctor and soon. Nothing about this is normal & if you are his daily care giver, you should know this.
Talk to the parents & if they don't or won't do anything about it report them. If this child hasn't been seen by a doctor it is neglect.
this baby needs to see a doctor fast as this is a sign that something is wrong in his development
It could be very bad wind. Make sure all his wind is up after his feed. (Try rubbing his back etc.) If this does not work - go to doctor.
Meningitis can cause stiffness. Please seek medical attention for the baby.
I'm sure the parents have already seen what is going on with this child and should realize some thing's not right. If the baby is having regular well visits at the Pediatrician then they should have known about this. Who ever takes care of the child during the day is their job to speak up about these things. If your concerned then defiantly speak to the parents about this, if it were my child i would be very concerned.
Just because a baby is eight months old and not rolling over does not mean he is retarted. I hope. The stiffness is probably gas...as my baby gets very stiff when she has gas in her belly or needs to take a big poop. A friend commented on her stiffness...she is stiff often..and its just because she had to massive diarrhea poops in her belly and once they came out she was back to normal..so my bet is that its just wind..or she is blocked up and really needs to poo.
Please get that baby to a doctor.
The stiffness alone wouldn't be a concern, but coupled with the other symptoms you have mentioned, I feel there might be something severely wrong with the baby.
