Why does my 7 week old baby fight to stay awake. He is not sleeping enough and yet you can see him fighting it

He is supposed to sleep about 14-16 hours a day right now and we can only get him to sleep for about 8-12 a day. He yawns all the time but when put down does not want to sleep. When he wakes up in the middle of the night it takes about 1-2 hours of rocking and pacifier before he will finally stop fighting is and fall asleep.

Any help would be appreciated!

Swaddling is definitely the answer. Either like they do in the hospital or they sell a swaddler blanket at Babies-R-Us that has velcro tabs to seal the baby in place. It is actually a relief to the baby to have his hands gently held in place. Even though my son is now 5 1/2 months old, when henurses at night and is fighting me, I still gently hold his hands close to his body so that he can't flail.

Swaddling worked wonders. We went from a baby who was only content to sleep with me (at 5 weeks), to one who slept 12 hours straight.

A pacifier in conjunction with the swaddling is also excellent - I have a medical style pacifier that has a stuffed dog attached to it (from Wubanub). I used to swaddle the dog with him, so that the pacifier would stay near his mouth. He could still spit it out if necessary, but generally, it would stay where he wanted it.

I also broke the rules and laid him on his side, in his anti-turn over thing.

Read "The Happiest Baby on the Block" by Dr. Harvey Karp. It gives scientific backing for the above ideas, and teaches you how to work with a colicky baby. Mine was not colicky, but the tricks worked wonders.

Best wishes...
He is just fighting sleep cuz he is about at the age where he doesn't want to miss anything. Try getting him on a schedule, with his feedings and than his naps will follow on that schedule. My baby is almost 4 months and she still does this, every night, at 7 o clock. He will get onto a schedule soon enough, until than, patience is definately a virtue.
things that worked on my little guy at that age - nursing, walking in a sling, car rides.

It's pretty normal to fight sleep at that age. frustrating, but normal.
I have a 11 week old so I know the feeling. My baby will fight his sleep right down to the last second. He rubs his hands over his face and gets so aggravated! Its hard because hes like almost asleep then he will wake him self up with his hands. What I have been doing is swaddling him so his hands wont wake him up. Hes been on a pretty good schedule giving us 6-7 hours of straight sleep a night. At night you should not talk to your baby. When he gets up make him a bottle let him eat then change him when hes a little sleepy,. then feed him more. My baby has learned that day time is for playing and night time is for sleeping. During the day we do not tip toe around him. We leave the lights on and play with him as much as we can. I think its just a phase that baby's go threw. I have a Friend who's baby is 13 weeks and is doing the same thing, fighting her sleep. Patients I guess will do the trick. Good luck!
I have a nine month old, and he's been sleeping through the night since he was 3 months old. Secret: after a warm bath before bed time , i massage his body with baby oil, espesically his legs, as babies kick too much , which gives pain in their legs. hopefully it'll work for you

and all babies are different, don't assume a baby is supposed to sleep so many hours cause the book says so.
Hes afraid that hes going to miss something, lol my daughter did it too, if there was someone at the house she wouldnt go to sleep she was worried something was going to happen and she was going to miss it.lol but you cant help but love them, they are wonderful. Congratulations
