Why is my three week old nursing ALL THE TIME?
He's been eating every 30 minutes since 5:30 this morning, its 11 now and he JUST fell asleep... He does this from about 5-6 pm until 10 pm too... and from 2am-3am. He eats at other times too... but he goes longer between. This just started day before yesterday.
*sigh* I need a pump and a nap...lol.
Answer:
Growth spurt...if your comfortable doing it-lay down and take a nap with your son while he nurses. if your not comforable taking a nap with him then do it when someone is home with you to sit in bed next to you and read a magazine and keep an eye on you and baby while you sleep and he nurses
Sounds like he is having his first growth spurt. Now that he's asleep, you should really go try to take a nap. Trust me, you need it and he'll probably do this for the rest of today and maybe another day or so. Good Luck and get some sleep.
At three weeks they go through a growth spurt and than again at 6 weeks and 12 weeks. so they nurse alot more often around these weeks or right before them.

I know it's hard right now and you're not getting rest, but I bet he's just in a growth spurt and this will pass. His eating will get more regular after a time and both he and your breasts will know when it's time to eat. Please don't give up on breastfeeding. You'll love it once you're able to get some rest and things are more regular.
Growthspurt! I don't care what anyone says, they usually come in "3"'s. 3 day, 3wk, 6wk, ect.
Your baby may not hit all of them, but it's a pattern that is pretty universal. I know it is tiring, but it will ease up before you know it.
BTW, congrats on the baby! I remember answering your pregnancy questions.
Growth spurt. Just go with it. It will end.
Your baby is having a growth spurt and when they do, they will eat a lot. Hang in there because after he hits his growth spurt then he will be sleeping more and eating less. Congrat's on baby boy
when my son did that, they told me that he was going through a growth spurt. some people told me to feed him on a schedule, but i figured he was hungry so i was gonna just feed him on command. there were times for days at a time where he just wanted to nurse constantly, and then after a few days he'd slow down. i know how you feel.
It's perfectly normal. People described it to me as he was having a growth spurt. Truly it is normal for them to eat actively for 10-15 minutes. Do you switch sides after about that long? The let down of each breat contains certain fats etc at different parts of the feed, so to get the most, you should feed him on both sides.
I slept with my son for the first five weeks - that way he could nurse when he needed to and I could sleep when I needed to:-) It worked well, and when I was ready to stop, I swaddled him up, but the pacifier in his mouth and put him in his crib. He slept through immediately.
Growth spurt! Baby's are hungry. I give moms who nurse a lot of credit. I bottle feed and I feel like I am CONSTANTLY making bottles. I go threw 5 12oz cans of formula a week. Its crazy. I couldn't imagine nursing! Good luck with that. I would like to tell you it gets better, lol but he's only going to get hungrier!
its normal.. be bothered if he was not!!
yea, just get used to it, my son nursed about 50 times a day , and he was gulping the ilk down, so it wasnt me, i thought something was wrong with him and took him to the doctor since he wouldnt stop eating and for months! the doctor said nope hes fine, he is just gunna be a big boy...so finally after 5 months of breastfeeding i had to quit, there was no way, it was like i had a machine attached to my boob all day. and now he is almost 3 and he is VERY tall and very big, not fat by anymeans, just a big boy, the doctor was right. BTW, a medela brand electric breast pump is the best and only way you should go..please stick with breastmilk either way. IT SUCKS! but please please dont go to formula unless its medically neccesary.

Here are two places you can go for answers. Hope they help you. I faced that problem wiht my daughter also, found out I wasn't producing enough milk nd had to go to formula. Good Luck:)
Welcome to the fantastic world of breastfeeding! Haha... it sounds like your baby has hit the first of many growth spurts (the next two will be at 6 and 12 weeks). He will probably sleep more and it will seem like he is eating ALL the time (and maybe he is!). Just relax and nurse your baby as often and for as long as he wants, and your milk supply will adjust accordingly. Remember this day in six months when he nurses every other hour and you want him to go longer between feedings! Sooner or later he will slow down to nursing about every 1 1/2 - 3 hours (most babies fall somewhere in there). Until then, hang in there and cherish these moments of closeness, and try to lie down and sleep with your baby whenever possible. It's a great time to learn how to nurse in your sleep (this will prove to be an invaluable tool!) Congratulations on your baby and especially on your decision to breastfeed him! Good luck!
on my experience, baby boy does take longer time nursing, and also more frequent, it can be frustrating, be patience if u can, unlike myself, I'm not patient, so i switch to formula, and still he drinks a lot too, but at least i am not as tired as before...
It sounds like a growth spurt. It should only last a few days for your milk supply to catch up to his demand, so hang in there. Don't try to schedule him this young. Get a boppie and figure out the best way to position him for hands free feeding. Then you can sit in your favorite chair and read or watch TV or eat a snack. While you have your feet up relaxing as you nurse him, picture the mountains of bottles you would have to clean if you bottlefed him. Then, summon that picture every time you think about switching to formula. You can make enough milk. I breastfed twins to 20 months old-so trust me, your body can make every bit of milk your baby needs
