My 9 mo old started having hard small ball like "poops". I the foods, is there anyway to help soften them?

Make sure you hydrate lots at that age!! Prune juice works great to soften them but when you are feeding more food than he is getting fed by bottle, its important to keep them hydrated and give lots of fruits and veggies as a natural laxative.
It may be that you baby isn't ready for the foods he is eating. DId you start something new, maybe a little thicker? Try to go back to thinner foods for awhile.
Try giving him more liquids, fruits, yogurt or applesauce. Small balls when he poo's means he's constipated.
Prunes will help them move better or Prune juice. Try not to give him too much bananas that will make it worse.
Have you switched to whole milk instead of formula? If so add a little karo syrup to the bottle. If you want just foods to help try giving apple sauce and pears, also prunes work well. Gerber makes an ok prune and apple(i think) baby food, not too bad. That works really well too. You can also use the juices of these fruits to help move things along. Hold off on the bananas, they will stop her up even more. Good Luck!
Prune juice 2 oz. mixed with 4oz. of water will help. Only 1-2 x's a day. Make sure to check with the Doc first. But it works great for my 15 month old son. Maybe you need to cut back on milk and give more fluids such as water and juces w/o too much sugar. Also make sure to water down the juices. Especially apple juice. It is really bad on there teeth if drank pure. Hope this helps.
If you are feeding her solid foods( i hope) this is normal, as long as she is pooping. Try giving her a bit of apple juice, fruit is really good, try mandarine oranges, mangos,kiwi fruit,peaches butnot apples or bananas they are constipating as well as loads of dairy products
The old standby, 2 tablespoons dark Karo syrup in 4 ounces of water. Worked for me when I was a baby, worked for my daughter when she was a baby.
Try mixing a bottle with half breast milk or formula/half prune juice.Or, try glycerin suppositories. If he/she seems to really be getting constipated, try stimulating the rectum by placing a rectal thermometer inside of his/her bottom with Vaseline as a lubrication. Hold it in there until the baby has a bowel movement.(about 1/2 inch in) My little girl got so back up that she had to have an enema. Be careful. She started out that way. Also, try backing off some of the solid food for a few days.
My babies started getting constipated when I started them on solids, and when they drink or eat large quantities of dairy. What I do is to give them apple juice or prune juice. Try that, but if it persists, then talk to your child's doctor.

Little kids have several bowel changes in their lives. It can be a change in the frequency of them (a kid who goes three times a day might go every other day or vice versa) to the color and texture. As long as he's not in distress where he's grunting and straining to go, just give him a couple of ounces of prune juice up to twice a day. It's thick and kinda gross, so mix it with an equal amount of water. (other juices like orange juice aren't effective.) Also, if he's eating cheese and yogurt now and carrots - decrease them a little bit because they can constipate.
