How do i get my 4 month old baby to sleep and stay asleep at night?

i start my bed time routine at 6pm, in hopes to get her to sleep by 7pm, sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. how do i get her to self-settle and to re-settle her self if she wakes during the night? and after her night feeds?

Well.here's my answer...take it or leave it, but it DOES work. It might be the hardest thing you have done at this point in your life, but let him/her cry it out. After the routine, put the baby in the crib and walk out. The first night is the hardest. All my babies cried for over an hour (I started at 3 months). HOWEVER, the next night gets a little better and the so on and so forth. Do the same thing for daytime naps (your baby should be awake for no more than 3 hours at a time). As I said, it is hard, but after a week or so you will have a baby that knows how to self soothe and settle himself/herself back to sleep. If you are uncomfortable just walking out there are other options (look at the Ferber Method online). You will need some support to do this...it is HARD. My youngest (4 months) cried so hard the first night that I was in tears and had to make myself a drink! But, one week later I was able to put him down at bedtime and for naps with a little fussing and no (or sometimes minimal) crying. Crying it out is not for everyone, but if you think you can hack it...give it a try!
Give her some nyquil
We found a consistent bedtime and routine was successful. We found that if only checked in, touched a tummy and left the room at every cry worked like a charm after 2 weeks of enduring crying. They say it takes 21 times of doing something to become habit. You have to be strong...don't pick em up...stay with it...let em cry and comfort themselves...dim room, white noise bear or sleep machine helped...good luck...stay strong!!
It takes awhile, I know sleep deprivation for the mother really sucks! Here's some tips from a great website http://www.askdrsears.com/html/7/t070300...
I highly recommend this book: The Contented Little Baby by Gina Ford. She outlines the appropriate eating and sleeping routines that allow your baby to sleep through the night. I speak from experience as I have a 6 month old boy who has been sleeping through the night (from approx 10pm-6:30 and then 7:30-6:30) since he was 8 weeks old.
Another tactic may be to try is to swaddle your baby for her overnight sleep. In the swaddle she won't startle herself awake and it may help her to sleep more deeply and re-settle herself.
Good luck!!
My four month old has bath time at 7pm, story time about 7:30, goes to bed/feeding time at 8:30 pm and is usually asleep by 9PM.
I get to him around 2 am BEFORE he is fully awake...that way he feeds and falls right back to sleep.

If you wait till they are completely awake and active, you'll have a heck of a time getting them back down.

Try turning up the baby monitor so that you wake up when baby is just starting to fuss instead of when baby is fully awake and fry feeding in the side lying position so that baby is in a more natural position to resume sleep.
Please do not take the advice of the person who says to give your 4 month old baby Nyquil! There are many reports and news of infants dying from this and other medicines. Always talk to your Dr.
I have a daughter 3 and my son is 3 1/2 months and wakes every 3 hours still and barley sleeps during the day. They will grow into a regular sleep pattern in time. Never use medicine. Just relize you will be tired the first year of your childs life..
