Anyone give there kid ranitidine for reflux? did it help? how long do they have to take it? can it harm them?

how soon does it start helping them?

Answer:
My daughter has acid reflux since she is a month old. I give her Zantac and if she does not have it 1 day she is coughing and all congested.
Ranitidine(Zantac) helps neutralize the acidity in the belly to reduce reflux. Dr.'s usually prescribe it for twice a day. Sometimes they use it in conjuction with Metoclopramide(Reglan) which you can give 15minutes before feedings which also works wonders. Usually, children grow out of having reflux by 24 months at the most. It works immediately. Reflux can be a little scary because a child can choke on the feeds. Even if you begin giving the Ranitidine, burp your baby well after an ounce or two and after feeds, keep your baby in the upright position for at 15-30 minutes after a feed and place your baby in a sidelying position if while sleeping after a feed. Spit ups may still occur but it shouldnt be as often. Good luck.
