Waking baby?

My 5 month old daughter does that sometimes too. It can take quite a bit to calm her down (nursing sometimes helps, but not always). I wonder if she's having some sort of nightmare or something. We recently went on a vacation, and the first night of the vacation was miserable. She kept waking up screaming her little head off. I think that there was just so much going on that day, so many new faces and what not, that she was just having scary dreams.
I doubt it's gas, because I'm usually able to settle her down by rocking her, speaking softly and shushing her, and sometimes by nursing.
ETA: Cassandra, we co-sleep too. She's woken up screaming when I'm in bed with her! I agree with you on the other stuff, though.
possiable he is teething, or he has a lot of gas, some babies never burp all the and then it buildd up and gives them a tummy ache.
more than likely it's a gas pain if the baby does it often, babies also pick up on bad/good feeling and recite stuff that they see during that day so dreams or gas pains can be either one try gas drops!

he wakes up and notices he's not with you. go be with him and comfort him until he falls asleep.
babies tend to wake when they are going through a cognitive growth spurt, a physical growth spurt, teething, had an especially exciting day, etc.
we just had our babies sleep with us and had zero sleep problems. life was very nice and nursing was greatly eased.
Do you put him to bed sound asleep?? If you do, he is opening his eyes and realizing you are gone and he is reacting to that. Wake him gently before lying him down and this should stop. He may cry at first but let him, he will not be hurt by it.
My little 4 month old munchkin does that too sometimes. I used to rush to her side right away only to realize that most of the time she was still asleep, and must be having some nighmares about big giant nipples coming to get her. I just now stay close to the door and listen to her and she falls back asleep right away if she has woken up.
