How do I get her to stop rubbing her eyes?

My 3-month old daughter has found her hands. This is a great thing but now she won't stop rubbing her eyes! I'm afraid she will scratch her eyes or blind herself. We've taken her to the doctor's and all they said was to put mittens on her. She gets out of them within seconds though! Is there any other way to get her to stop?

Answer:
Infants often rub their eyes when they are tired, so this is probably a symptom of tiredness & I would try to put her down for a nap when she starts rubbing them. To be sure she is tired, look for other cues when she is rubbing her eyes, such as yawning and fussiness. My son did this also and it took me a while to figure out that he was actually tired!

Also, my pediatrician told me that infants do not start to develop allergies until they are older, so it is most likely not allergies. Mittens is another suggestion, but it probably won't prevent the rubbing. Good luck!
How about long socks instead of mittens? Why is she wanting to rub her eyes all the time? Is there something irritaing them?
Little tube style socks will work better than mittens. They don't come off as easily. Otherwise, just make sure you keep her nails cut closely.
If she's rubbing her eyes a lot, it can be an early sign of allergies. You may want to ask your doc about that.
There might be a reason for rubbing her eyes. Are her eyes red or irritated? Might be allergies, might be dryness. I really doubt she'll blind herself, but check around to see if there's anything that might be irritating her eyes (particulates in the air, dry air, detergent or soap residue on clothing or skin). If you find that she's sensitive to detergents, switch over to the "free" types (no dyes, no fragrances). They make soaps this way, too, for kids and adults with sensitive skin.

Good luck.
put her to sleep because she is tired? If that isnt the case well when my baby was born she had a habit of hooking her fingers onto her lower eyelid and we had to use the scratch mits for a month so she wouldnt poke her eyes..using the mits worked because she unlearned that habit. Try to secure the mits better...find some way to secure them on even if its with tape until she unlearns that habit.
